Choosing Hose Clamps?

Hi all, I'm purchasing hose clamps for my fuel and bilge system (316 stainless steel). I know that I'm supose to get them with the ability to open at least 1/4" larger than the the internal diameter of the hoses, but what about the minimun diameter? Should I choose clamps with a minimun diameter the same as the hose's internal diameter or is it wiser to choose clamps that have a minimun diameter less than that of the hose's internal diameter?

I think you're worrying about it too much.

Just get ones that fit. I usually put two on the fuel lines.

The ones (316ss) I buy have the diameter sizes imprinted on them. I buy ones that have just enough extra band length to make inserting/starting easy if I have to open it fully for installation.

There are two basic styles of 316 hose clamps for boats. One has the slots in the band where you can see through. It's the most common and used for standard hose (bilge pumps, etc). The other type has a solid band with the screw knurls on the outside...stronger and used for heavy duty service or for wire bound hose (pressure water systems, inboard engine raw water intakes etc). These cause the least damage to the surface of the hose if clamped too tight.

There's a third clamp that has bolts (through welded on tabs) instead of screws to tighten with and a wide solid band (totally smooth without slots or screw knurls)...generally used for exhaust hose...wire bound or standard.

Take the advice and put 2 on the fuel system hoses.
