Re: Chris craft 283 distributor

I myself would recommend the Mallory, however that is based on my personal preference. I replaced my original prestolite distributor with the Mallory unit and did it in about 10 minutes, including setting timing. Then again, I have been working on engines as a hobby for about 35 years.

What do you think about this system?

Also, will i be able to connect electric tachometer with this system?

Ayuh,.... That's Alota Money,... The Delco system is as good or better, at 'bout 1/2 the price,...

Any of 'em will support a Tachometer,...

Re: Chris craft 283 distributor

You can go with the set up Bondo pointed out.....As he said best bang for the buck!

If you decide to go with the Mallory unit YLM624AV...I bought mine off ebay and it was the whole set-up......Dist/Cap/wires and coil for around $325.00

Unless you go with the route Scott pointed out...get what you have set up correct,.... Id wait till i get a new set up and start from scratch.

I found Delco kit for $290 and took it. One more question in video which i uploaded we can see that there are a lot of steams.. Its normal? Or there is something wrong with cooling system, water pump or mine exhaust pipes can do that which i welded of stainless steel? (i mean slippage to cool)

I understand, but i don't have much time... So, maybe there are any ideas what could it be from first seeing? When i start up engine without water for few seconds there isn't any fumes.. But when i connect water there are a lot of vapor.

Re: Chris craft 283 distributor

your supposed to start the water first. the vapor is steam. if your starting the engine first then starting the water this will be normal because you have just put cold water onto warm parts. that is also a good way to crack your exhaust manifolds.

Always water first.

and since your engine is not timed, I would wait until you get the new distributor that you ordered, then install it, then time it properly prior to running it any more.

Yes, i know that water is in first place, but it no mater, when engine is running with water he also throws a lot of steams.. Engine was in normal temp on video, and there was a lot of steams..

Did you see the link I posed in post #8? The same Delco kit is available for $179.

You ask about the vapor... much can be answered and cleared up if you do as I suggested. A compression test will help determine whether you have any issues with blown head gasket, etc. Also, pulling the spark plugs and seeing if any are exceptionally clean. That would also indicate whether you are getting water in the combustion chamber.

I saw, but i cant open it, shows error, try other browser, go directly to home page but it the same.. Compression is 10 bar (145PSI) in all cylinders. Heads was checked before i put them on the engine. Head gaskets are new. Spark plugs are a little bit wet after working, but its more look like unburned fuel.

Re: Chris craft 283 distributor

Hope my memories correct??
You have comp and spark.
The older 283's depending on the system had the 2 sets of points as a back up.
One set goes out the other still keeps on firing.
The one can be removed.
Just make sure the dist/points cam has the 8 lobes.
Wet plugs? This could be a faulty carb or it's set wrong.
Maybe wrong plugs, carb leaking under power?

5.7L GM Delco Voyager EST marine electronic distributor kit

Hi again, i have this kit in my hands, read the instructions, and understand that purple wire is going to B+ and gray one to tach, but my ship is all dismantled.. And i want to start up engine only. So as i understand i can connect purple wire to positive ground and gray to negative ground to coil can work, yes?

Ayuh,..... there ain't no positive ground, negative is ground,...

To start the motor, just 12v (+) positive to the purple wire at the coil's (+) is all ya need,...

For the tach to work, the gray wire goes to the coil's (-), not ground,...

The battery Ground(-) attaches to the motor's block,...

Stop throwing money and parts at it until you have it properly diagnosed. You asked for a distributor we showed you those. But unless you know what the problem is you will still have it. No dwell meter no timing light and a dual point distributor. Well I think we all know whats wrong here. Point gaps are probably way off and so is timing. I'm surprised it runs at all. Set it up correctly first then see what happens.

post a picture of the steam. some is normal since you are running hot exhaust into a bunch of water exiting the exhaust manifolds.

Did you set it after you set the point gap?
