Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

Haha, yeah, but I've got a good one that doesn't mind all my hobbies, so long as she gets to do some shopping! She's a water person too, so she's very supportive of getting the boat back in the water...

On that note... I did get the travel leg mounted to the gantry and everything is nice and level. Concern over my roller system caused me and a friend of mine to decide on another route. He's fabricating a trolley at work that will hold anything we can throw at it.

No pics or video, I just had too much to do today, but I plan on videoing the entire engine removal process, so that should be fun.

In reference to the new trolley system, imagine 1/4 inch steel plate welded together to create an upside down "U" with solid steel wheels rolling on the travel arm of the gantry and a pair of 1/2 inch bolts keeping the open end of the "U" from closing down, and he's welding a couple of lifting hooks onto each side for our chain. I think we'll be good to go when I get back from vacation... See y'all in a week or so...

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

Hey guys, back from an awesome vacation and the girlfriend said yes, so I'm officially engaged. :) I have a couple days before I head back to work, so more sanding and grinding on the hull. Still need to figure out how far my buddy has gotten on fabricating the new trolley for the gantry, but there's plenty to do until we're ready to pull the engine. Catching up on the threads. Hopefully I'll have some decent updates for y'all shortly...

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

So I found a good used non-corroded transom assembly today, complete with good functioning trim rams. It has all the parts and pieces, including good new, or newish bellows on everything. I still plan on going through the whole thing and cleaning, repairing or replacing whatever needs to be done, but this should save me a huge amount of time and money in the long run.

This transom assembly came off of an 80's model boat with a 4.3 liter, and an Alpha one on it, but it looks like it will line up just fine with mine. It came with the inner plate as well, but I figure I can re-use my inner so all the lines and everything still mount in the same place. Does anyone see any reason why this assembly would give me any problems. The only obvious difference I see is mine has two bolts at the top of the gimbal ring and this one doesn't. I removed these bolts from mine while it was still mounted on the boat and they don't seem to serve any purpose???

Does anyone foresee any problems I might run into with using this one??? I only have $150.00 bucks in it, so worst case scenario, I figure I can re-sell it if need be. Found it on Craigslist... :)

I think you should post this question on the I/O forum and MAKE sure it will work on your motor before you purchase. But hey, I'm just a DUMB OKIE!!!!:p

I'll get some pics of both units and do a search with the serial numbers. I already purchased it, and I think it will work just fine.

The last time I posted a question on the I/O forum, I got Kudos on my outdrive removal videos, and nobody answered any of my questions, but I guess I'm game to try again...

The "T" Gantry is finished and in the boat. My buddy is fabricating the Trolley at work this week. It will be much more substantial than my "skateboard" wheels and 5/16th bolt. It is 3/16th steel plate on each side with some 1 1/4 solid bar "rolling" inside of 1 1/2 steel pipe. There will be lifting eyes on each side and we'll keep the bottom from closing up under load with a couple of bolts connecting the corners. I'll have video of everything together this Friday and we plan to pull the engine on Saturday, so nothing much to post til then. I'll have some pics of the two Transom assembly's side by side here shortly, but beyond that it will be a slow week. I'm working the night shift this week too, so trying to sleep during the day.

Ok, so here are some images of the old Transom assembly and Gimbal on the boat. The corroded ones are my current and the clean ones are the recently purchased one. Pay particular attention to the two bolt holes on mine, where I removed two bolts, as compared to the new one with no bolt holes in this location. As previously stated, I removed these two bolts when I took off the outdrive and was attempting to remove the transom assembly before I knew the engine had to come out first. anyways, if the new one won't work for some reason, sombody please chime in and let me know why. Thanks...

Old one on the boat...

I don't know about the bolts but that gimbal bearing in the newer drive looks a little rusty.
Does it turn alright, nice and smooth?

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

Not really concerned with the gimbal bearing, as I plan on rebuilding the transom assembly anyways. My concern was with all the corrosion and pitting on my old transom assembly. This one will be a lot easier to just sand down and re-finish like Jay's was for his Sea Ray. I am going to use this whole thing, with my inner transom plate, so unless someone chimes in with a reason why it won't work, I will assume it'll be ok. After I get the engine pulled and finish re-finishing the hull, all this stuff will be re-built and go back in, but I have plenty of time. My splash goal is next July before the 4th I hope...

Thanks...

You will be fine with that new one. I am glad you are not using the old one as it was WAAAAAY pitted. Just rough it up with a scotch brite pad, prime and shoot it with enamel.

Cool, I was hoping that would be the case. I've only got $150.00 in the whole new transom assembly, so I know I got a good deal. Replacing bellows and bearing and everything else was already on my agenda, and then a new SE 106 Outdrive and she ought to do well...

Thanks Jay, by the way, I know I said it on your thread, but Congrats again, nice work and very happy to see your boat on the water!

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

Hey guys, Holy crap!!! It was hot today...

I got everything off of the engine so I'll be ready to pull it in the morning. Wires, Hoses, loosened all the engine mount bolts, removed the power steering oil cooler, etc... Of course most of this has to be done while lying upside down draped across the engine, and it's pretty boring, so no videos. Look for video tomorrow if I have time to post, or after the weekend. I did manage to take 50 pictures of various components and attachments on the engine for the re-assembly process, which prompts the following two questions.

The first is in reference to this assembly on the starboard side of my carburetor. I was having a problem with the boat stalling whenever I shifted from forward to neutral, or reverse, or vice versa, and a buddy said it had something to do with this assembly? Any thoughts.

The second is this switch located near where the shift cables run, and I think it may be the neutral safety switch, but I'm not sure, Just out of curiosity. Any thoughts???

Thanks... Hopefully the Gantry will perform flawlessly tomorrow and the engine will be out. Later guys...

#1 is the choke stove and dash pot
#2 looks like the shift interrupter switch.

CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Removing the engine... (With Video!!!)

CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Removing the engine... (With Video!!!)

So the engine is out and resting nice and secure upon the deck in the cockpit of the boat.

Never heard a creak or a groan from the gantry or the deck at any point in the process. Below are four videos documenting the process...

I have a Party to get showered up for this evening, so hopefully these videos will help someone out, or if not, at least document my restoration.

By the way. Thanks to everyone who has chimed in, PM'ed or whatever, helping me along the way. I would never have had the guts to tackle this project without the support of the i-boats forums and the great fellow boaters here. IT'S PARTY TIME !!! :)

A special thank you goes out to my beautiful Videographer, my fiance, Ms. Dimple Jean, and the inspiration for the name of the boat... She declined a cameo in any of the videos!!! LOL...
