I have a 1971 45hp Chrysler outboard motor that was only used very little for 3 seasons. Its been in my basement for the last 35yrs. It ran great when last used, I would like to restore the motor and start using it again. I have no experience with outboards. Can someone share what should done before attempting to start using the motor again. thanks

Well, I have resurrected old Chrysler engines sitting in a field with trees growing through them. Basically you would need to remove the flywheel. Clean and gap the points. Change the lower unit oil. Replace the water pump impeller. Remove the carb and check for varnish or old congealed oil. Clean it if need be. Since the engine has been sitting for so long just for safety squirt a teaspoonful of TWC-3 oil into each cylinder and rotate the engine a couple of times by hand before starting. Then when you start it take it easy for a while before going to full throttle..

Mind you: It may not be necessary to remove the flywheel and set the points but it is easier to do before you mount the engine and try to start it--way less frustrating than going to the water and the damn thing won't start!

1. Is it on a stand that will allow you to start it in a 55 gal barrel (plastic and cut to allow the lower unit to fit as low as possible)?
2. If it?s on a stand, do you have the controls to start in a barrel?
3. I had a 1970 35HP Chrysler (since 1984) that should be related. It has been very good with inspections and service.
4. I?ll possibly have pictures of services you might need (recommended) as pulling the flywheel if needed.
5. I?ll share a Pic to compare with yours and would like to see your full side w/o the Eng cover/hood if possible.
6. Since 1984 I have I missed 03-06 due to droughts and coming up on two yrs due to drought, flooding, and ?My Aging Pains?. I have always started each season in a barrel due to my distances to fish.
