Chrysler 105hp new owner questions .

Hi Folks


This is my first post i am glad that meet you.

I am from Greece and these days i found this 105hp Chrysler. Is a brand new engine , old local distributor had it stock for years.

My questions are :


1) What to do at break in period ?

2) Do you know the average fuel consumption ?
My boat is an inflatable about to 660 pounds empty and i calculate will be 1450 pounds (full weight with 2 persons).
Is with a light V not too deep.
Because the boat will be overpowered i am thinking to change the propel (bigger) or carb jets (smaller from 90hp maybe ?) . Is this right ?

3) How i can identify what power trim i need ? Is any other power trim option from Force or i need only the genuine part ?

4) what do you suggest me about parts ? I want to order and have always stock some basic parts because here in Greece they haven't nothing.

OK! That 105 is approximately 1979 because it has a one piece lower unit and Motorola ignition.. It is probably 105 at the prop because it has the big venturi TC carbs. Almost ALL the 105 I have seen have the small bore WB carbs. Around 1982, Chrysler down-rated the 105 to 90 to comply with regulations requiring horsepower to be measured at the prop, not the power head. This leads me to believe that your engine MAY be a 120 or 125 with a 105 cover. They all looked the same. To be certain, look at the aluminum information plate located inside the cowl, by where the control cables and fuel line enter. The first three numbers will define the horsepower. The letters will define the year.

Power trim can be any unit from early 1970s up until about 1993 Force. The only difference was the transom clamps and the method of attaching to the transom.

As far as parts, the same block was used until Force stopped making engines However, there were two different diameter pistons once you know for sure what horsepower engine you have we can tell you the piston diameter.

Your engine has the Motorola capacitor discharge ignition (Magna-Power). The distributor has an electric eye instead of points.

Break in should be about 2-3 tanks of 25 to 1 gas-oil mixture and no full throttle. Don't baby the engine, but don't abuse it either. Since it has never been run, I would idle it for 10 minutes or so the get oil into the internals. Then run it at varying speed up to about 3000 RPM but do not maintain a steady RPM--vary it.

After break-in the mix is 50 to 1 gas to oil Be certain to use a TWC-3 oil. DO NOT use automotive oil. It is harmful to the engine. You can expect to use about ten gallons (35-40 liters) per hour of gas-oil mixture at wide open throttle. They are thirsty engines.

As far as parts, most of what would need changing usually never goes bad. You should, however buy a couple of water pump impellers. Since this engine has been sitting for so long, the first time you start it check for good water flow. The original impeller may have hardened with age and may not pump adequately. Also, check to be certain it has lower unit oil. The lower unit has a fill and vent screw on the side above the anti-ventilation plate. The drain will either be under the bullet in front of the skeg or on the side of the skeg below the center of the bullet.. DO NOT remove the small screw at the front of the lower unit bullet. This is the shift pivot screw. Removing it can lead to a big job replacing it.

Spark plugs are Champion L20V or UL18V.. If you can not get them NGK BUHX or equivalent will do quite nicely. They do tend to foul with prolonged idling so you would want one or two new sets. These plugs are surface gap and need not be set. They can be cleaned with a green Skotch Brite pad and will last almost forever.

Symptoms of fouled plugs are difficulty in starting, failure to start, or stalling at idle. If the engine shows these signs after break-in, the first thing to do is clean or replace the spark plugs. That is a very clean engine--Good luck with it.

Well, George--I forgot to welcome you to iboats forums. Don't be shy about logging on with any questions.

Now, I made a mistake. Chalk it up to getting old. I mistook the carbs. The ones on the engine ARE WB carbs and the plate does indicate a 105 so yes, it is a 105. Fuel consumption would be somewhere around 10 gallons (35-40 liters) per hour at wide open throttle.

It is not likely to happen because as long as you use the correct amount of oil and do not run the engine too lean, they will run for years. However in the unlikely event that you do melt a piston, the engine can be rebored and pistons are still available. Standard bore on your engine is 3.3125 (inches) and stroke is 2.80

Ok Got it . I have some mechanic skills but not with 2 stroke engines. I will not risk engine for the gas. I will try to fix my cruise with bigger propel and that its.

So how i can identify if this Force has an power trim that will fit to my 105 ?

Up until about (I think) 1993, ALL power tilt/trim units were exactly the same as far as cylinders and mounting. The only difference was the early units had a three wire motor which did not require relays. Later units used a two wire motor which did require relays. So: Look for a late Chrysler or early Force tilt/trim unit. If in doubt, post a photo here before buying it.

Your engine is rated 105 horsepower at 5000 RPM Use a propeller that will keep the engine in the recommended 4500-5500 RPM range. Do not try to use too big a prop in an effort to slow the engine and gain fuel economy--it does not work that way. That lower unit uses a nominal 13 inch diameter prop in various pitches--13, 15, 17, 19. It can also use 13 inch diameter propellers from small gearcase Mercury engines. The gearcase is a nominal 4 inch diameter. Props are 15 spline.

That propeller is a Chrysler CLEAVER stainless steel propeller. It is a racing propeller and would not be much use in anything other than racing. It has very little blade area and is fully cupped. It has slightly less diameter than the standard sport props. Because the blades are thinned they are rather delicate, especially at the tips. SO, if you run them in sand or gravel you will almost certainly damage them beyond repair. You can tell the pitch because on the side of the hub there will be a group of numbers like 529-21 The 21 is the pitch. The prop is actually a Chrysler prop made by Michigan for Chrysler. It is a 15 spline prop and will fit your one-piece lower unit.The ones I have had an aluminum Chrysler tag glued to the hub. --It came off after one run.

I have two of them and they are both 21 pitch. I paid $200 US each so if you get it cheaper you are doing well. While not exactly rare, you don't see them too often on ebay.

As far as the tilt/trim. If that Force engine in the photo is later than about 1993, then the trim will not fit. Fastest way to know is if it has a Mercury lower unit. They used a single ram tilt trim and this will not swap to Chrysler engines.

My engine already has a new 19 stainless Chrysler propeller. This propeller is as an other option for better cruising and maybe consumption at lower rpm. Numbers are R A 476 265. is a Chrysler sticker to the side .I don't know if is 21.

Today i get informed for one 75hp new engine . I waiting to check it maybe i will buy it for backup if is cheap.

No, George, you will not get better fuel consumption or better cruising with that prop. As I said it is meant for racing and use on a very light hull. On a typical sport hull it will be a disappointment. It MIGHT be acceptable on a small bass boat. I used mine on a 14 foot flat bottom powered by a 125. RPM was 5900, speed was 55 MPH and fuel use was 18 gallons per hour at full throttle.

Ok Frank . I thought that because my boat is very light (280kg) and not deep V , the engine will over power it. So with a 21 propeller that will perform faster maybe i could combine the ratio and the rpms.

I check today again the stock propeller and is 21. I will test it with 21 and if is too big i will go for a 19.

You mention changing jets.NO leave the carbs just like they are.
You need to install the motor.
Prop: If you have a light boat and a 21p prop you might be in the right area?
Hook it up and go for ride.
Then check the RPMs while running full throttle.
The wrong prop can increase your fuel usage by 15-20%.
I changed from a 17 to a 19 and the usage went up 15-20%
The trim/tilt should work.
Before you install it, test the t/t as they can be bad and you'll waste time putting on a defective unit.

I did my first ride . 15 miles total . From lower rpm to 3500 . I have at 3000rpm 26-27knots . 3500rpm 30-32 knots . Do you think that this range of rpm is the best for cruising and efficiency ? I did the mistake to pass 3500 rpm and the engine got crazy was like a turbo overbooost !!! Like a switch from 3500 and up

George: You need to check RPM at wide open throttle. It should be in the range of 4500to 5500 RPM. If it is in this range, then the prop is correct. Cruising at 3000 to 3500 (assuming the prop is correct) will give you the best fuel economy. Generally, full throttle makes a lot more noise, uses a lot more fuel, and only gives a few MPH more. However I did not notice your previous statement that your hull is only 280 KG. That is very light and you may get a thrilling ride at full throttle.

Frank i have 2 major problems . One is that my steering wheel turns very easy to the right . I have already turned the plate at 100% at the right position i think.
If i took out my hands is very risky to fall out of the boat.
I am still brake in the engine but 2 times that i pass 3500rpm the boat gets big torque from the engine . Is like a boosted engine after 3500rpm .

So i am sure i will never see 5500 rpm this is the reason that i am asking . Thanks
