Ok. I am not an outboard mechanic....but I have a 15 hp Chrysler for my dinghy. I have never used it. It has been sitting a couple years.
I hooked the hose up to it and it seems to run fine. Plenty of water coming out 1 hole, less out the other. And one has oil coming out of it... Just a little. So....

I am going to change the impeller and see if I can figure out what else may be wrong.

My issue is this... I took off the 4 bolts holding the lower unit on, but it obviously is still connected to something and I can't figure out what that may be.

I would take any hints or tips that you can come up with.
Thanks!
Rocky

1. There could be a bolt under the snout, we had to remove snout to get a socket on ours,we have a 125hp.
2. A little oil is ok, two strokes are very oily ,I think your fine ,it is a little scary at first.
3. If your sure all the LU bolts are out and still hard to drop LU,the water tube could be stuck on water pump housing?
4. It's best when you get a new outboard to drain LU gear oil, change all on motor fuel filters, clean all jets in carb(s) or rebuild them, check every inch of all wiring ,do a tug and twist on every wire going into a connector, wires love to break in there so you can't see them.
5. If two stroke you may need to add 16 oz. of two stroke oil per 5 gal on gas.
6. You should have a factory service manual, I know where to get one, tommarvin24@yahoo.com

Most of the water comes out the snout under the cavitation plate.
The "holes" might be plugged with wasp nests??
The shift linkage might be holding it in place.
There should be only 4 screws holding the gear housing in place

As jerryjerry says, the shiftrod is holding the LU.
Put the gear in forward (the rod will go downwards) and the gap between the LU and midleg will open up another1/2 in.
Look in the gap and you will see an screw holding the shiftrod lower and intermidiate together.

One other dumb question - since I don't have it apart yet - is there a gasket between the LU and the midleg?? should I seal it with RTV or something?

1.If this is your first impeller change, a You-tube videos explains it perfectly.
2. You should torque the bolts down to the correct torque, HF has inexpensive torque wrench's 12 bucks.
3. Nordin, is Frank ok don't see any posts from him?
