Chrysler 1975 62HF 6HP won't start

I recently purchased a 1975 Chrysler 6HP, 62HF, outboard motor that wasn’t starting according to the previous owner. I thought this would be a great project since the motor look in good condition. The previous owner mentioned he was able to get the motor to fire by putting gas in the spark plugs. I am mechanically inclined and familiar with small engines but don’t know much about outboard motors.

I connected the gas line, primed the engine using the bulb tried to start it and the motor did not start as expected. I then checked for spark and there was spark for both cylinders. I did a compression test and one cylinder had 70 and the other had 91. I also disconnected the fuel line from the carburetor and compressed the bulb and gas did come out which I captured in a container.

I didn’t spend much for the motor, but the experience is worth just as much as getting it to work or at least understand why it’s not working.

I’m looking for some advice on how to proceed.

Thanks
Tim

I have been working on a lot of these little engines lately and a LOT of them, seemingly with spark and fuel, seem to not start using the built-in pull starter.

If you have spark, try squirting a little starting fluid in the carb and wind a rope around the pulley on top of the flywheel.. When cold, the reduction starter of the pull start unit simply does not seem to turn the flywheel fast enough. When warm the engines usually will start well enough with the pull starter.

Starting fluid does not have oil in it so use it sparingly and use a 50 to 1 fuel/oil mix with TWC-3 oil

Clean the carb and set the air/fuel mixscrew about 1-1 1/4 turn out from ligtly seated.
Maybe the idle/low speed circuit is clogged.
You have to choke the engine when starting.

The throttle pickup point must be set/checked after you cleaned the carb. There is a mark at the throttle/timing cam. When the roller touch the cam at the mark the throttlebutterfly should start to move.
Adjust with the screw at left of throttlebutterfly linkage.

Thanks for the advice. Today I removed the carb and clean it with carb cleaner. It didn’t appear dirty, slime or present of any build up. I re-install the carb and followed the instructions in the service manual. Primed the gas using the bulb and used a separate pull cord as suggested which was an arm saver. The motor will fire every other pull and run only a second or two. I did another compression test using the separate pull cord was able to get 90-91lbs in both cylinders. The motor has two lines on what I believe is the cam. The service manual mentions to align the line with the center of the roller, but which line? Should the throttle be in a fast or slow or, etc? Any other suggestions are appreciated.

The line to the right, the one the roller will reach at first when you go from lowest speed.

I have a similiar 6hp but it has a push/pull bar for the throttle, and another lever for the gears. It may be getting spark when you pull start it, but it could also be shorting under load, so check all areas where the High tension cables can rub, check you have the right spark plugs and gap as well. When you try to start it, check you have fuel coming through by taking out the plugs and earthing them, then holding a white cloth at the plug hole while you have someone pull start it. You should see some fuel on your rag.
Easy things to check first, then check out the you-tube vid on how to adjust the idle, from memory the vid is for a 7.5hp chrysler or similiar but same for yours.
You should have your cam roller on the mark to the right of the cam, when you have your throttle in neutral idle, there is another mark to the left for WOT, which would be your fast.
Unfortunately my 6hp Chrysler is a pull/push throttle and a lever for the gears so bit different to yours I think. Yours would be more like my 12hp which has the gears and idle in the throttle/steering arm.
