I have an old Chrysler Magnapower 55 outboard and I noticed I have been leaking gear lube from my lower unit. I notice these two little holes towards the middle of the lower unit on the starboard side. I see one hole was completly open and the other had some type of rubber plug in it but I accidently poked it out. I drained the lube and see that there is water in it. I am wondering what the purpose of these holes are and what i should do about them?

Re: Chrysler 55 Lower Unit question..

The hole closest to the bow is a drain hole for fluids that make it into the motor leg. I don't know what the other one is for. Mine looks like there's a brass pin inside or something.

I have a 1969 model 5591 55hp Chrysler that has a 2-piece lower unit. I have lower end leaks too. I can save you some time researching seal kits and gaskets (if we have same basic motor).

3 days ago I ordered lower unit seal kit #18-2636 (Sierra part #). This kit doesn't include the gasket that is in between the 2 pieces of the lower unit. Been told by guys on here, along with the nice gal at Fairwinds Marina in Annapolis MD, that they aren't making these gaskets anymore. ......BUUUT she had 2 left in stock that were still on the shelf. I bought one of them, $10 for the gasket and $13 shipping. I told another guy on this forum about the one they have left but don't know whether he bought it or not. If you want to get it, the phone # is 410-974-0758.
There's a guy on here that has one he uses as a pattern and has offered to trace it for people on this forum. That is another option for you to get the gasket. I will try to find his handle and let you know.

Re: Chrysler 55 Lower Unit question..

Thanks for the heads up on the gaskets! sounds like that has been a bit of an up hill struggle for you. I appreciate the feedback.

As far as the two holes, Im pretty sure we have the exact same motor. Now on mine the little hole closest to the bow had some kind of rubberish plug that when I poked it in a bit water would seep out. I accidently pushed it to far and it fell inside the cavity. I ended up just filling both of the little holes in with a gasket paste. Is this a stupid move (ha) or what would you suggest I do about this tiny yet big concern I have?

i had this same motor and ran for 10 years with the same problem, changed the gear oil every spring, no issues, they're a tough little motor.
