I just bought a small boat that "worked fine when I parked it last year"
I just bought a new marine battery and hooked it up. I tried to start in neutral and nothing...... After playing around, hooking and unhooking the battery I accidentally turned the key when it was in forward throttle and it turned. Didn't start just turned, same in reverse..... Neutral nada..... Not even a click....
I'm assuming that something has been put on backwards... Any help would be great.... The water looks great today
Model number 559HD
serial 1032

Sounds like there is something wrong with the adjustment of the controlwires. The engine is equiped with a neutralswitch.
At starboardside of the powerhead there is a switch which close the startciruit when the gear is in neutral.
The gearshiftlever shall push the switchbutton when it is i neutral.
If the button not pushes in the startersolenoid do not get any power to close the startcircuit for the starter.

No Title

Probably not put in wrong.
Just needs to be adjusted.
The #3 in the pic has a button on the bottom(I think) that is stationary.
There is a cam that moves with the cable as you shift.
The cam needs to hit the button when it's in N.

Motor off, battery unhooked.
Unhook the cable ends.
Shift into N
Turn the prop with your foot as you put the linkage into N
The cam and the button should line up.
If not then adjust the cam or the cable connectors.

If your 55hp is related to my 35hp 1970 Chrysler (which some are). The neutral switch is the black box, under the yellow wire in the attachment. W 2010 Cleaning Since 1985, as needed Greasing (1).JPG ith a button that the linkage must pressed in to crank. It should only crank in neutral vs forward or reverse if the linkage is correct.

If it worked before, were cables or Etc moved since then?

I have never had it running... Last owner said it ran fine..... lol
It presses down the neutral switch in full throttle or reverse.... Moves away when I put it in neutral... I can adjust the cables a little but not as much as I need to... I can't see how to adjust the linkage to press the button in neutral..... Hmmmmmmm
I have a small feeling that the cables might not be the right ones....
Think I need to bite the bull it and take it into the mechanics...
I just wanna fish!

You in AU? There are a bunch of Chrysler fans in AU. Post the location and see who answers.
What kind of fish in the pic?

I Love to share with Old Chrysler 35-55 hp Engine owners what has been shared with me and I have learned on my 1970 35hp. Please tell me the seller took you out and shared some info.

The sharing started with the seller taking me for an approx 1 hr trip at the lake going over A-Z about how the boat/eng/trailer had been cared for since new and what I needed to continue to do. We took a nice long ride doing all he could think to tell me.

His instructions served me well as a beginner but I finally had deal with some services he did not mention. This site and a Clymer Service Manual have helped me since (1984-85 until today w/o any major problems.

The seller should have shared more IMO from what I feel I am hearing. A manual and pics should help us help you. Unless you are only into the fishing but you should want to be safe as possible (to return).

Do you have more info to share and pics or have you decided to let a mechanic troubleshoot this matter. Which is not a bad idea, except to start with unknown expenses.

I have pics/notes of all of my major services including my control that is not a button type but I do have a pic of the button?s wiring Etc.

Good Luck!
