Chrysler 6 HP == Diagnose my symptom!

I have good spark from both plugs. I cleaned the carburetor and put new gas in the old tank. Cannot get it to fire. I've poured gas into the cylinders, and still didn't get anything. What can be wrong?

Is there any way you could post a couple of pics of the ignition system and all wiring?

Yes, there's this one picture I took a while ago back when I only had one plug giving a spark. I've tinkered with it more and now I got a spark in both. I imagine there'd be a minute difference there.2011-08-21 15.32.26.jpg

Haven't checked the timing, but I did a compression "finger test" and there's some..

I don't believe either could be so bad that it won't ignite gasoline when I pour it directly into the cylinders and there are two raging sparks to fire anything in sight.

you need good compression for it to work

I understand the compression needs to be perfect for it to run as it should, but I know that if I pour gas in a jar, and start throwing sparks in there, I'll get fire. I haven't gotten a chance to get a compression tester yet, but I'm quite sure there's something else that's wrong.

I'm not seeing a flywheel key. Although, it could be on the other side of the shaft in the pic. The cam is held in place by this key, and if it is missing or sheared you will likely get irregular spark, but it will never run right or even at all. Let us know if it is there or not.

The flywheel key is still there, intact, on the other side of the cam in the picture. When I pull out the spark plugs to test them, they fire quite consistently. Used to be one firing consistently and the other not so much, but they're both good now.

Hmmmm... Well..... When you test for spark how are you going about it?

take the plugs out of the engine, stick them into the plug caps, leave the spark plugs touching metal on the engine somewhere, yank the starter and watch the sparks. Done it myself and another person holding it and me cranking, etc.

Sounds like you have all the makings for a runner, but you have ruled out everything but the timing. Do you have an automotive timing light? and are there timing marks on the flywheel?

I know I don't have a timing light, but I don't know what timing marks are and how to test the timing. Is there a tester I need to get? I figured since you guys got me hooked on fixing outboards that I'll have to get a compression tester, and now there's a timing light? What's that all about?

On most Force and Chrysler OB's there will be stamped timing marks on the outside of the flywheel, just under the ring gear. However, there are some I have run into with no marks except TDC. You need a standard automotive timing light, you can rent one from your local Autozone, Napa, etc... I would suggest buying a manual for your particular motor to learn how to properly do this. Sometimes folks will share a downloadable copy with you if you ask. Unfortunately, I have little experience with the little guys like yours. The smallest Chrysler I own is a 35hp parts motor. However, the basic principle is the same. If can check for timing marks, and wrangle up a timing light, we can walk you through the process.
