The very top of the shift rod (under the bottom carb)is held in place with 2 locking/ pressure nuts.
The nuts get loosened and the shift rod can be lengthened or shortened.
The shift lever, where the cable mounts can have as many as 4 different holes.
When shifting are you turning the prop as you shift?
It MUST be turning or it will bind.

Hi Jerry I already tried to adjust under the carbs earlier, but like I said I lack 3mm total throw somewhere in the system. Most likely the remote control and then of course some play from there to the gearbox itself.
There is actually only 2 holes in the shift lever, confirmed by looking online and the service manual. It is still a possibility to alter the position here and achieve the desired throw in the end.
I was shifting without the lower leg, so no bind there, but a very valid point for someone reading and checking on their system!

More problems found and fixed.
Turned out the lever under the carbs had significant play in it because the alu lever got worn against the SS shaft. I had already drilled a 4mm hole through the shaft and lever to reduce the wobble, but it wasn't doing much.
I then gave it a bit of thinking on how so solve it the best and easiest way.

I simply cut a grove in it from the bottom allowing it to be compressed against the shaft.
Once this part gets worn it will have significant play in all directions making for a very sloppy gear engagement.

But my understanding of the whole remote and gear system has increased a lot. And I can see now, that adjusting the shaft under the carbs or at the square coupler in the leg is the wrong approach, but it's the obvious fix when you don't understand how the system works.
I'll get back to that sooner or later if anybody wants to learn about the gear system in these old engines and how to actually adjust them....

I don't know if I'm the only one who knows, it appears that not that many has taken the time to actually understand how and why.

Your condescending and arrogant post in the other thread made me realize what kind of person you are! And I don't tolerate arrogant or condescending people.
When on a forum, or in real life, I always treat other people with respect. Even people I've never meet before. If I believe they made a mistake or keeps asking the same question, I correct them in a kind non confrontational way. But condescending / belittling people I just shut down!

You actually said that I, and others who didn't know the correct answer to a problem should not post on this forum... Imagine saying that in an open forum!!! and then continue to post misinformation yourself and feel insulted when someone points out your wrong! Amazing.

How did I insult "everyone"? By pointing out that adjusting the shift shaft was actually the wrong approach! Holy crap, try googling condescending behavior and reference that to the other post you made and your reply in this one! Your in for a surprise.

"I'll get back to that sooner or later if anybody wants to learn about the gear system in these old engines and how to actually adjust them..."
Talk about arrogant, after 35 years I've been doing it wrong.
Part of this is making sure the right info is handed out.
If it hurt your feelings? who cares, not me.
And did I mention you by name? No. Finished.

Don't you think it's about time to start doing it right after 35 years?
I did it wrong for 2 weeks then I figured out something didn't add up.
I my country we call people that can't actually troubleshot parts replacers, and then there's mechanics.

How is it your job to make sure the info given is right, and how is it even possible when you never actually knew how it worked!

Did you mention me by name? No you didn't, but it was actually quite clear what you meant as I was the only one giving my thoughts at the time.
And you know what! Had you just said, "listen, I think you should do this and that, I don't agree with las". Then all would have been fine.

Did I belittle you when you gave the wrong advice on gear adjustment, pressure testing the leg with an air gun or when you claimed regular fuel was better, as premium burned hotter. All total nonsense and potentially very damaging for the people you gave advice. And a hell of a lot more expensive than some 200$ trigger you mentioned when people toast their powerhead or bust their gears.
Should I have said "Well xxxx don't listen to everybody in this thread" whenever you gave a bad piece of advice.
The fool is just guessing wildly.

Well I do hope you are finished. But feel free to come back and see what causes these units to fail and why adjusting the shaft does nothing.

Just received the NOS remote I bought of the german ebay, I was damn lucky to find this and the total cost was lower than ordering the missing bushings in the states with all the tax and shipping.
There's even a little instruction book with it describing how to mount the cable depending on the hp of the engine and lots of other useful stuff.
Now I wait for the new cables I ordered and hope they are more flexible that the current very old ones.
