Chrysler 75 HP Outboard question?

I bought an older Chrysler Sport Fury 16 foot boat. Believed to be around a 1973 or 74. Has a 75 hp Chrysler outboard. Runs good. I changed the bottom end oil end of last summer and drove it one time before putting it away for the winter. Getting ready for this summer, notice that near the vent hole, just below and to the right, a small hole, looks like it belongs there and observed bottom end oil oozing out. Is this normal?

Smell it. If it smells more like gasoline, it is unburned oil from the engine. Lower unit oil has a skunky-sulphury smell--very distingtive.

If it is definitely lower unit oil, then it is time to pull down the lower unit and check the condition of the shift rod seal and the drive shaft seal below the water pump.

Check the O ring seals under the studs (either 2 or 3 depending upon year) holding the gearcase bullet to the mid unit.

While you are there, check for corrosion on the case and possible perforation somewhere.

Do not discount that the gearcase O ring may have failed, allowing water pressure to blow in and force water out past the seals.
