Hello fellow boaters! I am new to the forum and it is great to be here to learn as a newcomer in the boating world. Now off to my question. I just recently purchased a 74 glastron open bow in imacculate condition. I mean the boat itself is very clean and looks really nice but my problem is the outboard it came with. The guy said that the motor has been good to him until recently he has to spray starter fluid through the intake or carb cylinders to give it a boost and sure enough it would start. He showed me that it starts also so i was very confident that i can do it myself but unfortunately that wasnt the case. I took it out today in the water hoping that I can also get it to turn on but I was out there for 3 hours trying to turn on the thing and it just keeps cranking. When I push the key in the choke opens and when i crank it the starter would engage with the fly wheel and it would move it but in one rotation at a time, not constant. it seems like the starter is not giving enough kick to start the engine. So i replaced the old battery with a brand new one and still won't start. If i keep cranking it, it causes my starter to get soo hot and the + - cables start to smoke because the heat is melting away the plastic cover of the wires. Im not sure if its the starter thats gone bad... Its just frustrating how the previous owner got it to start right away and i couldnt... Please help on where to start on troubleshooting this motor and what suggestions i can do to fix the problem. Thanks guys!
