Chrysler Charger 85 Won't Start

Well, I couldn't get the '72 Evinrude 100hp to start so I went out and bought a Chrysler Charger 85. That's what it says on the motor cover but the model # is 1157h8a which shows as being a 115hp. What is the deal with that? Is Charger 85 the name of it? The man that sold it, sold it as a 85hp. Anyways, I can't get this one started either he says it runs good and has 175 lbs compression in all 3 cylinders, has rebuilt carbs. It's doing the same thing as the '72 Evinrude 100. It will turn over but not start. Any suggestions.

My guess on the label, is some lakes have an HP limit. Boats also have HP max rating stamps. The previous owner may have tacked that on there to get around such restrictions, or maybe he replaced the cover.

Anyway, you need to find out what is missing..
put some gas.oil mix in a cleaned-out spray bottle, and squirt a few shots int the carbs. Try to start it. If it sputters or runs briefly, your problem is carbs/ fuel-delivery.

Does it have spark at the plugs? if not, check the kill circuit first.

Hi Doodle bug
The model# you give is indeed for a 1978 115hp Chrysler. Well the 115hp is a four cylender engine. Since your motor only has three cylenders, I think we can safely say it's not a 115hp. If you can look the engine block over closely you may find a mod# stamped somewhere. It's anybodies guess as to why the descrepency. Maybe the transome clamps where replaced. Maybe an 85hp powerhead was put on a 115hp carcus (I don't know if that's possible). What ever the case, My best advice is to get a repair manual.Quite a few of these older motors can be put into service at a reasonable cost. The only kicker is you have to know what your doing and how to perform the tests to determine the problems. If you don't want to fork out the thirty some bucks for a manual, try the public library. Quite often they'll have just what you need. So let's try to find out exactly what motor you do have. Then take a symptomatic approach to trouble shooting, then we can be more help.

Re: Chrysler Charger 85 Won't Start

Well, we finally got it to run. At first we couldn't get it to go full throttle. Well yesterday after some adjustments it went full throttle. I guess it was too much it was only for a few minutes if that. All of a sudden it sounded like it was losing power we slowed it down as soon as we could but it died. Now it won't start at all. Sound familiar to anybody. Also how am I going to find out what year this motor is? The id plate that is on it is obviously wrong. What else can I look at to determine the year of the Chrysler Charger 85?
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Doodle
Did you look for a stamping on the block? If you obtain a Clymers manual odds are your motor will be coverd there. The only problem is going to be trying to get the right parts.
