First thing, quit with the starting fluid, it has no lubrication in it and will only do more harm. Next items to check, compression, spark, fuel. It sounds like you have a definate fuel delivery problem. Post results of the comp., spark, fuel tests, then we will take it from there

I rebuilt the fuel pump (3 gaskets & a diaphram). It will now start and run (seems to be very high rpm) with the choke fully engaged. When I place the choke in the halfway position rpms increase for a few seconds then the motor shuts down. When I return the choke to normal (open) it dies immediately. I reingage the choke and it starts immediately but repeats the above. I let it run for up to 2 or 3 minutes with the choke on and it still performs as above.

Going to go with Jerry at this point, dirty, clogged out of adjustment carb.

Thanks for the reply. The carb appears to be fairly new. When looking at the carb I can see the choke plate opening & closing. There are a couple of screw holes on each side of the throat, should there be some sort of a filter there? Is there a publication that details how to clean and adjust?

Your idle circuit must be adjusted with throttle valve closed other wise it will not work or set properly, you may want to check the ignition to throttle timing it may also be out of adjustment.

There is a mark at the beginning of the throttle cam on the mag/stator plate or stator ring rather, that when lined up with the Throttle Cam Follower your throttle valve should just start to open.

Also make real sure carb is clean and float level is set properly, float should be parallel with the carb body when closed.

You may also want to check Points Gap making sure they are set to .020 if they are closed or opened more then .020 that will throw your ignition timing way off and cause it to run poorly.
