I have a 1970 Chrysler 55hp

Anyone have a clear picture on how the Tilt lock plate goes? I've been messing and messing and can't seem to get it right. I'm starting to think I have the wrong piece on my boat.

Here's a pic of the piece I'm talking about.

The only thing that isn't original is the nut I'm using on the transom bracket.
Thank you for the pic. I'll mount it up that way.

Okay, so your bracket looks correctly installed, but it almost looks like it may be for a smaller or bigger motor? did you get the bracket off of a different motor? Also, your transom clamp should have about an inch of space between the transom cap and it (ie, raise it up an inch). Sometimes this binds up the engine when it drops down, not letting it cycle fully down into the locked position. Maybe send some pics/vids of the attaching hardware on the lock bracket from the rear of the engine angle so we can see if its binding.

This was on the motor (disconnected) when I got it. If I disconnect the bracket then it will tilt down and I can lock it into place. No binding there.

I'm wondering if the clamp or the lock plate isn't for a different motor. This is the only pic I can get, I tried to get another one but my phone went into low battery. (wont let me take pics like that).

Re: Chrysler tilt lock plate.

The bolt that is holding the lockplate on the transom clamp, is it a flat headed bolt like the one on the motor? if not, and it is a standard bolt, it may bind. Mine rattled out one day and I tried replacing it with a standard, it didn't work. I then modified the bolt head and it cleared the engine.

Yes the bolts are both the flat headed bushing style bolts that should be there. . it's just that outer nut you see that is different.

It's only when I connect the lock plate I can't bring it down.. I'm thinking the plate isn't for this engine.

Re: Chrysler tilt lock plate.

Thats differen't them mine.

The 1 1/8 is the same
The 2" on yours is 1 5/8 on mine
The 2 7/8 on yours is 3 3/8 on mine.

So I wonder if I could just lengthen the the hole on mine? Dremel it out?

Edit:

Fixed!! I marked and dremeled it out. Now the tilt lock works. Lock in the upright and allows to tlit down to running position.

I can not see what adjusting it would hurt if it w/n make the plate too weak. You should be able to look at it and get an idea if it?ll work before putting time into adjusting. I actually use a transom saver off the trailer on the road for support vs trusting the plate (a good distance). jow

Re: Chrysler tilt lock plate.

The plate seems strong after cutting it out. As for trailering, I have a 2x2 I shove between the clamp and motor leg to keep it elevated.

I just dont trust that little bracket while on the road. But it will be nice to have it while messing in the garage to be able to tilt quickly without having to shove a 2x2 to hold it up.

Re: Chrysler tilt lock plate.

Good News & A Quick Fix/Job!! I basically use the plate as you do (around home and on the lakes when needed). Otherwise, the boat and motor are boomed to the trailer to reduce wear and etc on the road.. I also ?Used? a leverage arm to raise the motor when I was ?Healthy? but ?Active? (attached). jow
