I have a '73, 85hp Chrysler, model #857HE, with 1 coil, a distributor and 1 set of points. The book says the timing should be 32 deg. BTDC at WOT. Is there an easy way to set the timing without having the boat in the water?

Ktm..you really need a manual...it will tell you exactly what to do...you can use either an ohmmeter, or voltmeter...connect red to distributor connection, black to ground, turn dist till points close at desired setting...clamp dist in place. A book will do a better job of explaining this but this is basically what it is...just a Thought

Re: chrysler timing

I do have a Seloc manual. It says to set the WOT timing with the boat in a test tank or body of water. I just thought someone could tell me an easy way to do it without taking the boat to the lake. Thanks.

If you have the same seloc manual I have look on page 6-37..."distributor with breaker points". If you don't have that page I can copy and email it to you...just a Thought

You can pull the spark plugs. Set the throttle wide open. You will need to bypass the starter saftey switch. Crank the engine. Use a timing light to set the timing. I would set it at 30 degrees before. You will be close. The most accurate way to do it is on the water running WOT. Man is that crasy or what?

buy yourself a set of ears i think they call them they wrap around yopur lower unit where your water intake is . then you attach them to a garden hose , make sure they fit tight aroung water in take vents..

You'll kill the engine trying to do this. Running one of these engines wide open throttle with no load will quickly cause engine failure. In a test tank, they typically use a special test prop that loads the engine properly without throwing all the water out of the tank.

SIMPLE:

remove all the plugs and ground them so the engine will not start. First set the points to open at the top of a lobe. Replace the dist. cap.

Now, with the ignition on and the throttle in full forward --WOT-- Turn the flywheel by hand until you see the top plug spark. That is where your timing is at. Adjust the link on top of the distributor body until the top plug fires with the 36 degree mark on the flywheel at the -4 line on the block pointer. That's 32 degrees. -4 is 4 small lines left of the long line on the pointer. If you only have one line, then you need to measure 32 degrees on the flywheel. It is about 1 tooth less than 36. If your flywheel has a decal, I think 32 is already marked.

Only turn the flywheel in the clockwise direction, the direction the engine normally turns. If you miss the spark, do not go back, go all the way around again. You MAY "rock" the flywheel 1 or 2 degrees or so to double check once you have set timing.

OOPS! 3 cylinder engine---delete number --Set points to .014 at top of a lobe.
