I have a 1972, 120hp Chrysler outboard, and its a beauty at starting up, but once putting it into a idle position the motor misses or cuts out completely. the motor has all new merc.ignition, as well as all new wiring. could it be the pistons, coils, or the powerpack? advise would be most appreciated.

If it were me, I'd look at the fuel system first. You could have a bad fuel pump diaphragm, clogged up carb, bad needle and seat valve. These are things that are fairly easy to fix and can be done inexpensively. Don't forget to do a compression test also.

You can't go wrong with a Seloc Chrysler manual.

I'm haveing a similar problem. I've allready torn the carb apart. I've been working on this for several months now. I've checked alot of things, and have narrowed it down to the fuel pump.
How would you check for a bad fuel pump diaphragm?
Thanks

phree-1...you would put a new one in, they're an inexpensive part. You can take the fuel pump apart and look for holes in the diaphram, which sometimes you can't see anyways...just a thought

Chief 101 I totally agree. Got a question though. I changed the diaphragm last year and it works fine. However the screws on the top of the pump keep coming loose. I'm afraid of overtorqueing them. What would you suggest.

I would use some light duty threadlocker on those screws...if you overtighten those screws you will likely distort the diaphram some...just a thought :)
