When I start my outboard, It will start for a few seconds and then die. I can do this repeatedly, over and over. Gas is also dripping from the carbs. Any suggestions?

remove the carbs and disassemble them. Clean them well paying special attention to the inlet needles and float level. If the inlet needles are worn, buy two carb kits and replace the needles and seats.

Thanks. Needles and seats seem to be fine. I installed a see-thru fuel filter. I guess if I'm running 50% fuel and 50% water, that can have an impact :). I'll get some clean fuel and give that a try too. I'm befuddled at why so much water forms in my tank. It has been sitting around for a few months.

Frank,
I got fresh gas, purged the fuel system. I'm getting spark and about 120 compression, but it won't start. Any other suggestions? Plugs were damp but clean. My only other change was using a different car battery because the original boat battery died. I put the control lever in the top middle position, pull out the knob and turn the ignition while pushing in to close choke.

After you pulled out the knob you have to push the control lever forward until it stops.
This is the coldstart idle position, it disconnects the shiftlever and increase the throttle a bit.
It makes the engine more easy to start when it is cold. You do have to push the key in to choke when turn the ign.key to start.

Check condition of the fuel lines and primer bulb and replace if worn/old. You would be surprised the difference a new bulb makes. I was.
Try and keep the fuel tank close to full to minimize condensation in the tank = water.

This evening I came home from work and turned the key without priming and it started right up. Nice evening boat ride. Looks like I was flooding it. I'm learning.

A good 2 hour boat ride today, low and high speed. Near the end of our voyage, the engine started jerking a bit and was harder to start and put into gear (without dying). Any tune up guide out there? Things to check?
