Clamp Bracket Question

Greetings Gents,
I have a 7.5 HP Merc SN 3730520 with a bent clamp screw. It's proving to be very hard to find some parts for it.

My question is how does the clamp screw washer attach to the screw on some models? Mine appears to have a screw of sorts holding the washer to the thumb screw. However, the parts diagrams I find for my SN range do not show a screw.

How else would the clamp washer affix to the thumb screw? Are they peened on for some models?

Thanks!

Yes, some of them were peened. If yours has a screw, why not try to unscrew it? Just a silly thought.....

Re: Clamp Bracket Question

I tried to unscrew but it's going to take some special attention. I think some heat will help but it's not in my shop where I can work on it.
The problem is finding the right replacement. I can't find one with a screw listed anywhere.
How can I straighten the bent one?

Re: Clamp Bracket Question (update)

I was wrong and the washer is machined on the thumb screw.

Now how would I go about installing a new one? I would just cut the old one so I can remove it. Since the washer is machined or peened on I figured I could put the washer on, heat the tip of the thumb screw orange hot, and then peen it over by hand or by screwing it down onto a piece of steel with a divot to mushroom it over.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Re: Clamp Bracket Question

Fixed it!

I cut the washer off so I could remove the thumb screw from the bracket. I straightened the bent thumb screw by applying pressure in my vice with it padded with lead bars. Then I drilled the end of the thumb screw and tapped it 8-32. I re-installed the washer with a screw. Good to go.
