I am still working on buying a 2001 NItro 700 lX from a month ago. It has a 2001 Mercury 90hp motor. Went this morning to crank it up just to check it out one last time. Cranked right up idled a little rough on muffs. My concern is when I put in reverse it makes a clunk noise when it first goes into gear. Sounds like two gears engaging. IS this normal to hear this?

Re: Clank noise when put in reverse.

some clunk is normal but alot of people wind up wrecking the reverse gear by not allowing the prop to slow down before engaging -like when docking -reverse should always be used gently on an outboard .as for your situation it is hard to tell without seeing it .
