Hello I just purchased my first boat- wellcraft steplift 20' with 115 merc. Now I have the dilemna of getting it home. My truck currently has a class II hitch with a 300 lb. tongue weight and I'm wondering if this will be enough. I have no idea what the boat weighs so I'm hoping someone might know or be able to give me a good estimate. The traler is a loadrite w/ single axle. Thanks

Not knowing exactly what you have I would guess you are above 3000 pounds for the boat and trailer which would be more or close to what you would want to tow with a class II. Anything over 3500 lbs needs to go with a stronger hitch just based on limits but I would go with a bigger hitch just for a safety margin.

Congrats on the new Wellcraft. They make a great boat.:D;)

You don't say what year your Steplift is but you are going to need more hitch for it. The boat weighs 1920-2300lbs dry(depends on year). The motor will be about 200-300lbs. Trailer 700-1000lbs, 60gal gas x 6lbs=300lbs, plus gear.
You will be close to the 4000lb range by the time you hit the road.
So you'll need at least a Class III hitch.

See www.wellcraft.com click 'owners' then 'product info guide' and select the year and model for the factory data sheet.
Goto www.loadrite.com to find out the weight of the trailer.

You didn't say what your truck is or what it is rated to tow. Be sure your truck is rated for at least 5,000#.

I had a class 2 hitch on my Ranger that was rated to tow 2,000#.
