I have this 45 hp Mariner that I mam trying to restore. It sat for a while and I couldn't get it to pump water with ears in the driveway. Ive had this boat a long time. I know how to use ears. When I looked at the impeller it was burned up like it had been run with no water. I git it all fixed up with a new impeller and put the ears on and once again now water. What could prevent water I put in with the ears from making it inside the water pump? Please help

Be careful when using water muffs. If they are not correctly seated the pump will starve for water and burn up in short order. Rule of thumb is to shut the engine down if there is no water discharge after 5-10 seconds. Reset the muffs and try again.

Did you get all the pieces of the old impeller? Is the key in the impeller? put it in a barrel with the water 6" above the pump.

Thanks everybody, especially Scott. Soon as you said key I reached in my pocket and pulled the key out. I go it back together now but its too late to get back on the fuel problem. This used to be a nice little boat. My Etech bit the dust and our local dealer is a crook. I am hoping to get something to fish with. I am wanting to buy a new boat where I get a warranty. Bass Pro has a nice web site where you can get the price up front. Everybody keeps telling me that I don't want a 4 stroke Merc

Check the waterpump base for signs of melting. Ditto on the waterpump cover and liner. Replace all that are melted, scratched or bad.
