Clearing water from exhaust manifolds

A friend of mine just purchased a nice 2006 Ebtide deck boat with a Merc 5.0L MPI. The previous owner told him to start the boat for a few seconds after he pulls it out of the water to clear the exhaust manifolds. I have never done that even for a second for fear of damaging the impeller. I told him I pull the drain plugs from the exhaust manifold to drain the water. Does anyone run the boat for a second or two like the previous owner told him?

Ayuh,...... Dumb idea that won't clear any water, but will smoke the impeller,.......

Your buddy better put in a new impeller before using the boat. The seller wrecked the one in there now. If it isn't shot now, it will fail on him.

Apparently the previous owner watched jet skis clear out their exhaust after loading and thought it boat was the exact same...

Yeah, that's what I thought and that's why I don't do it, but I'm no expert thought I would check. Thanks for the help!
