Re: Click... Whirrr... F*()$(#!!!

Thanks for the tips. I have a friend going to help me with it tomorrow night. I eyeballed it and made a sketch and took a couple of pictures. I am still a little unsure of what bolts to remove. I am going to put a couple of links to the pictures I took. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it.

Also, the Clymer manual states "Reinstall any shims that were removed to ensure proper pinion-to-flywheel mesh" Will this be a pretty obvious thing when I get the starter off?

Thanks again for all the help, here are the links to the pictures:

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mh9371b_2000/detail?.dir=/53cd&.dnm=c123.jpg

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mh9371b_2000/detail?.dir=/53cd&.dnm=8ace.jpg

Unhook the batteries before you start messing with hose wires. Otherwise you are going to find yourself upside down staring at a lightning storm.

Here's the final verdict for those of you who were/are interested. The longer of the two bolts that hold up the starter had sheared off, causing a lot of stress on the smaller of the two. I found the remains of the long bolt down in my bilge. As I went to get my hands in there to unbolt the smaller one, i put some pressure on the old starter and it snapped right off, basically leaving the smaller bolt holding up the remains of the metal that was left. I was able to drill out the larger of the two bolts, installed new starter, voila. Boat starts again. Also, there were no shims to aid the "meshing of the pinion to the flywheel" so I didn't have to worry about that.

Thanks for everyone's comments/help.

Yeah, I had to upgrade my firepower after that thread, down on DC. I thought they might be tryin to make a play for my pieces. Gotum outgunned now. :D

What you mean re difficult to remove 302 starter? One bolt is stareing you in the face and the other takes a 12" extention. Unbolt one wire and buta bing, she falls off in your hands.

That because its that simple....

Whereas I appreciate the fact that most of you are seasoned mechanics are are more mechanically inclined than others, please respect the fact that some of us are not and are just looking to save a little money and learn. My concern about the clymer manual is that there were no diagrams of where the bolts were, and the wiring diagram did not match how my original starter was connected. Not to mention all the varying models of starters according to what serial number your engine is.

Special thanks to those of you involved in this thread, and others on the board, who do not talk down to others.
