Hi, I'm new to outboards, old to tinkering. Picked up a J700 1000B serial # 367243.
Has Carb # 470
0982 on the left 165 on the right and LMB somewhere below.

I'm looking for PDF of basic info re: timing and tune up etc as well as any other good troubleshooting tips.
As this is a freebie @#$% shoot motor I need some free links to the info, can't get into buying manuals for an unknown quantity.
So thanks to any and all for your replies, Patrick.

Welcome, your on the right track not spending anything on this motor. While they can perform adequately they can be problematic. Not running the same 2 times in a row.
Clinton has been gone since about the early 80s
It uses a Clinton air cooled power head with a water cooled exhaust leg using an impeller.Water should mist out the relief holes on the leg.J700 7hp built in 70 and 71.It has a magneto ignition under the flywheel points set at .020.Champion CJ8 plug at .025 probably super ceded by now.48:1 fuel mix use TCW3 rated oil or quality 2 stroke oil.
You may find an aftermarket service manual covering many brands under 30 hp at the library.Do a compression check before any serious work.60psi or better.
Good luck.

Thanks, I'll do the compression and go from there. BTW does spraying ether into the carb (bypass of fuel system for trouble shooting) work on these little 2 strokes?

It will run but not good for the motor it tends to wash out the oil
CAREFULLY rig up a spray bottle with fuel and spray it into the carb.
have a fire extinguisher handy. This should be done outside Gas fumes are treacherous.

Re: Clinton J 700 info needed please.

I've got 90 psi , nice healthy blue spark, can't seem to start it on ether, but I think I just need a good supply of gas.
This engine uses the weird 1/4" male bayonet style with what looks like a twist lock collar ( aprox 1" diameter) Seems pretty weird and hard to jury rig, i guess I'll bypass the FP for now and go direct.
While I'm on the subject, what is a standard FP that I can change in and and who makes the carb?
I'm pretty pleased with the comp pressure and I like how simple the engine is (no gear box, no water pump and for 7 hp a very light engine) This will be the engine for a small skiff that I will keep on the roof of my bus so I'm thinking maybe a carb rebuild and away we go.
