clunking sound in reverse

I Have A 88 135hp Merc. That When You Put It In Reverse, Its Fine But When You Give It Gas It Starts Making A Loud Clunking Sound Please Help. Thanks Shawn

could be shift cable missaligned a bit, but more likely its been abused. shifting into reverse at higher than neutral rpm can damage it
