CLUTCH DAWG,, WHAT ALL HAS TO BE REPLACED?? GEARS etc.

Hi I have a older 1973 25 hp rude that jumps in and out of gear classic worn clutch dog, when doing this job is it S. O. P TO replace the gears also? do they come in a set or sold individually ? any help thanks upfrnt

Well in theory if the forward lugs of the dog are gone, you are supposed to change the forward gear as well. I dont always practise that. I inspect with a magnifying glass, if all looks well, I leave it alone. Just a judgement call you have to make.

Depending on the severity of the wear, you could likely flip it as well, as you dont get into the RPMS needed to pull it out of gear as you do in forward. Again, judgement call.

If you're lucky, all you have to do is replace the clutch dog itself, but the FWD gear is usually damaged as well in which case you'll need to replace both items. While you can buy the pieces individually, it's probably cheaper/easier/better to get a complete, matching set of gears and clutch dog. I had to replace my clutch dog on my 20hp recently and I was able to get an entire set of gears, clutch dog and prop shaft for the price of a dog alone. Check aomci.org, ebay, marineengine.com, or try to find a donor motor with a decent LU.

Great, I plan to break it apart tonight and inspect, I will post what I find this will be only my second time opening up a gear case so for me its a bit scary, I'll take lots of photos & go sloooooooooow.
