Man that is funny anyway you spin it..8)

Well I found the Clutch Dog was missing a tooth and the pinon nut was eat up a lilttle. What are the odds my pinon gear is still good. I found the piece of the clutch dog and it was still noticable was not eat up that much. What do you think I should do replace the pinon nut and clutch dog or everything.

First thing to do is to dismantle the lower unit completely in order to inspect the components, after which you can seperate the bad from the good.

I don't understand the question, but you can see the mesh marks on the gear teeth.

If there's any damage to that pinion gear at all, I'd strongly suggest you replace it. Unfortunately the pinion and forward gear are a matched set.

The dog can't touch the pinion nut.PERIOD.!!!
But we do have to figure out what happened. My guess is the retainer spring on the clutch dog came off,the pin came out,and had it's way with the gearcase.

What is the model number of that engine? We would like to know exactly what we're referring to.

Kind of hard to see details that aren't in focus, but there is a chipped tooth on forward gear(1st pic) and nick to the teeth spiral patern on the reverse gear(2rd pic). The pinion gear looks like it is pitted(3rd pic). Check all bearings and oil pump too.

Re: Clutch DOGGY ate my pinon nut

I rebuilt the section of the gears that holds the clutch and rebuilt all the tips and recut. Had the clutch catches built up and I recut them by hand. Another guy in the shop filled all the chips. Have you ever seen this done and if so how did it hold up. X ray showed a less or minus of 9000lbs per mill. in the areas rebuilt. Which was less than that on the section of the pinon that connects to drive shaft.

Two tips: 8)

1. Please resize your pics, you're killing the dial-up folks. Here's a free program to do the resizing.

2. On your camera, find the Macro mode (little Tulip or flower icon). You can then take clear close-up shots.
