clutch question

i was wonder is there any way to test to is if the clutch has gone out when it out of water i put in forward and the prop well rachet clockwise but its fairly easy to turn counter clockwise i was also told that i could have spun my prop so i had it rehubed and the motor did the same thing when i would put in gear in water nothin no movement but when i put the muffs on it the prop spins good when in gear so i was told i need to get the clutch replaced
any thoughts would be great

1989 mercury 40 hp 4cylinder oil injected

My Seloc manual says to have an assistant turn the propeller shaft and at the same time move the shifter back and forth to determine if the clutch is engaging properly.
