I have been looking at reviews on Amazon.com about which book is best for rebuilding a 1977 pre-alpha outdrive. Can anyone (that actually knows) tell me?

Thanks

I have had a Seloc for many years and have no complaints other than it's sometimes hard to find what you're looking for.

Get the real thing,a Merc manual, for your drive. The others don't write their own manuals, they misinterpret the real thing.
DHP

I have a SELOC for my OMC... It left a lot to "interpretation" I had to go to the library and read Clymers. For engine work, I also had to look at a Mitchell manual for CHEVY.

Neither Clymers or SELOC were inclusive, although together it did make life a little easier.

I agree with DHP... get a true shop manual.I would have, but could not locate one for my rig.

Did you look here: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/srvcovr.pdf to see if your version drive is online?

I have Seloc and Merc manuals. The Seloc is good for getting a good general background on how something works. The merc manuals are usually more detailed in the procedure, but not always. Good to have the two to compare.

'77 MERC
I used a seloc when i rebult my first Model 1 merc outdrive. It was hard to find my way around in and left some portions to your imagination. But I got the job done. Ran that outdrive hard for years!

On this latest project I purchased the O.E.M. book(s). One orders them according to the configuration of your engine / outdrive. They put the book(s) together and send them to you. I ordered one for the engine and one for the outdrive, it was bound into one book. The OEM books I purchased were 89 dollars and some change. + tax + delievery. If I were to do it again, I would be paitient and find one on E-bay. If you deceide to go this way, mail the seller and make sure that the manual covers what your looking for.
O yeah, the OEM manual covered 7 or 8 other styles and configurations (engines and outdrives) as well.
P.S. the 2"X4" is a tool I keep, (some where around here), and if you lose it...it should float!....sl

77 Merc,
If you open this out drive up and deceide that you need to sink some serious $$ into it, then look onto the company advertising the outdrives for sale on the banner up towards the top on the iboats web page. The represntive of this company has posted here, supplying information regarding the rebuilding process they use. Also there is a chap from UK posting of a company in the States advertising an outdrive for his merc 888 for about 1200 bucks. food for thought. If it's just seals nd maintainance, go for it yourself! there are many posts and tips here on how to's. these guys here are great! use the SEARCH tool....sl
