When I went to my boat yesterday I noticed that there was oily fluid leaking from the drive somewhere. I found out it was from the port side trim ram.

I noticed that where the ram enters the cylinder there was a ring shaped piece (seal maybe) that had come off. I slid it back on as tight as I could.

Im gonna need to fix this ASAP as its leaking fluid all over the place.

Questions are, these things are expensive at $300+ each. Can I rebuild them? If I do have to replace one with a new one can I just replace one or do I have to replace both sides?

If I can rebuild them, do they sell rebuild kits?

Ayuh,... As with pretty much Any hyd. ram, yes it's rebuildable...
But,...
Being an OMC,... I donno if "Kits" are available...

I'd suggest a used 1 from ebay...
Yes, you can change, or rebuild 'em 1 at a time...

Re: Cobra trim ram(s)

Just checking around right now.

I think I found the rebuild kits but they vary in price alot. Im wondering if its just because its old OMC stuff or if this isnt what Im looking for.

Are any of these what I need to rebuild it?

How hard is it to rebuild one? Is it a PITA?

Yup salt water barge.

My thinking was I'd rather have one (or two) I rebuilt than a used one from eBay. But I'll take your advice and just buy two used ones.

Thanks Bond-O

They are something I would only buy used if I can inspect them first to make sure the line threads and seats are good! If they are buggered up, you now own a paperweight as there is no repairing, and with the stainless hose ends into aluminum, bout the first place they start corroding....

I have a Volvo SX drive and believe these are the same. I rebuilt mine with an OMC kit. It was @ $25.00 with shiping and it was very easy to do. I had to get the proper spanner wrench to take the caps off but that only cost me $5.00. I will look for the part number when I get home from work today. I boat in Salt, always rinse and had NO problem getting tha caps off. Took me about an hour to do both.

Re: Cobra trim ram(s)

I went to my boat today and I saw the other trim ram was leaking. Not as bad as the port one but good enough. It's easyto see if it's leaking because the black fins on the drive are right under where it drips. I'm pretty sire that the starboard trim ram was not leaking yesterday.

Can a messed up or broken trim pump cause both rams to blow seals?

I ran the trim up a little and the pump sounded like squealing but it might be because it's low on fluid right now.

The kit you want is part # 985060. Cobra Tilt and Trim seal kit. Put that number in google search and it will come up. I ordered mine from Outdoor Network in Lake Placid, FL. You'll need 2 of them. The spanner wrench for the caps is a 1.5 inch face spanner. Mine is an ARMSTRONG 34-107. Google that and it comes up. The seal kit was $24.00 with $6.00 shiping. These are quite easy to do and cheaper than used ones on ebay.
