can someone help me please. this might be a dumb question but how do you assemble a replacement coil on a 1975 Johnson outboard 25hp? It looks like you have to shove the spark plug wire into the coil and a little metal needle pokes into the center of the wire. on the other end of the wire that attaches to the spark plug it looks like the spring looking thingy with a point on it needs to be pierced into the spark plug wire. I tried this but it doesnt seem like the wire will stay connected to the coil. It moves around and falls out. Do i need to do something else to it to get it to stay.

also, is there any special process to installing the magnito on the round plate where the points are located (under the flywheel)? I had the motor running before I went and replaced the coil and the magnito. Now with new parts on it, it dont work. Very frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,

Hi gransee. You actually need to twist the new wires onto the posts of the coil to ensure proper contact. Also be sure that you're using metallic (copper/stainless steel) core wires. modern graphite automobile wires won't work. NAPA sells 7mm copper core wire for about $3 a foot. 10-12ft. should be plenty for your motor. You'll also want to get 2 crimp on 90 degree boots. You attach them by stripping the last 3/4" of insulation off of the end of the wire closest to the plugs, then fold the wire back on to the wire and crimp on the new boot, then cover with a new 90 degree rubber boot and voila! new spark plug wires. Give these links a read then try reinstalling your magneto.

I bought the new coil and new magneto from a johnson dealer and they were specific replacement parts for my motor. The coil, wire and boot all came together. The motor does not run with the new coil and magneto on it. However, when i put the old ones back on, the motor ran again (well kinda). now i cant get it running at all. It has to be an ignition timing problem. Tried putting new points and condensers on, new plugs. Not 100% sure how to set the points. the way I had set them before (when the motor actually ran good) i turned the cam to the set mark and set the points at .20. that worked real well. then I had to try updating the parts and now nothing works right.
