I know I know! Electric shift stringer yuk!!! I just replaced the foward coil that got fried the last time I was out. My question is how do I know that I got it seated nice and flush in the housing next to the prop bearing? There is a small area that it presses into and I did the best I could to carefully tap it into place. It appears to be in just as far as the previous one was according to pictures. Should I extend a paperclip and feel around for any space between the coil and the housing? Let me know what you think!

This is a before picture of where it seats...pointed out by the green arrow.

Re: Coil Seating Properly

I wish I could help; I looked in the manual (seloc) to see if I could see anything that called out a certain clearance, it just says to "press the forward coil inward and at the same time pull on the shift wire until the coil is fully seated in the housing." It mentions a coil installation tool also. Is one needed or can you do the install fine without one?

It also mentions that the coil wire must be aligned with a hole in the housing, and to use an ohm meter to check for a short after the coil is installed. If you have the manual you probably already know this.

One Question, how did your coil get fried? Was it just failure of an old part, or did something happen? I have an electric shift, and I'd like to avoid this type of thing, if possible. :)

Thanks For checking. I read it from the same manual and the picture shown with the tool is a larger outdrive than the one I have. Mine is a little simpler with no hole and groove. I think I got it seated well but my mind is always worrying "what if" I didn't.

My unit doesn't have shims and so I can't figure out how to know for sure everything is right where it needs to be.

Re: Coil Seating Properly

I have managed to get it seated finally. What I did was take a small mirror and shattered it within a rag. I then took a small triangular shard and epoxied it to the end of a coat hanger. With the coat hanger and a small powerfull flashlight I stuck it all the way down inside and looke at the reflection of the inner housing and the coil. I could see that it needed to go another 1/8th inch. It took some carefull visual perception...but sure enough a few more raps of the coil setting tool I fabricated seated it well.
