Cold starting problem

I have a 1996 4.3L Mercruiser. When trying to start the first time of the day, the motor fires up immediately then once the fuel that is in the carburetor burns off, it stalls. It takes a LOT of cranking to pump the fuel back up to re-fire. I've been using starting fluid to get it to restart. Once it starts again, it starts fine all day and will run at wide open throttle with no problem. I figured that the gas was running back into the tank after sitting so I tried replacing the anti-siphon valve, but that didn't work. I also checked to see if the fuel pump was getting juice while cranking and it is.

Almost sounds like may be the float in the carb may be sticking or the filters need to be replaced.

But I'm the new kid on the block some one who knows more will stop in and tell you what they think.

Have you checked that your choke is functioning properly?

Yes. The choke is working.

I forgot to metion in my original posting, that before I changed the anti-siphon valve, I pulled the fuel line at the carburetor and no gas is flowing until you crank on it for at least a minute. I have not checked that since replacing the valve since the symptoms are the same as before I changed it.
