 I had the box reassembled and connected, but it binds on the shift cable when going into reverse. The issue is the shift linkage in the box wants to go back farther than the cable will allow. The cable is disconnected from the engine linkage, so the only thing I can think of is that the linkage in the box is out of wack. I need some help here. Are there any adjustments inside the box that can be made? Or can I move the pressed on plastic retainer on the cable? I am using the lower connections inside the control box.

Hi there, The black pressed on plastic retainer is permanent/non adjustable. If you had the internals of the control mechanism completely torn down and reassembled? Then it sounds like something did not get put back in the original order.

Did you happen to have the remote control service manual while working on the control mechanism? If not it may help you see what's going on.

Start here on page 246 and go up, (Make sure you get to page 255 +)
Boatinfo - Mercruiser Service Manual for Remote Controls

Also the cables being in the lower connections seems to be in the correct position for your right hand/standard rotation stern drive.

Good luck.
