I've been bummed lately about the commute to work from our new house. From our old house, I drome 21 miles and it took 40 minutes or so. From our new house, the commute is 27 miles and takes 50 minutes each way. If i take the interstate, it is 31 miles and takes anywhere from 35 min to 75 min. For whatever reason, this has really bummed me out. If my work schedule ran differently, I could use the interstate at other than rush hour and the commute would take probably average 40 min, but changing my schedule doesn';t look like it is happening.

What do others have for a commute?

Re: Commute to work

Now I commute 16 miles, all but 2 miles of which I drive along the coast and can see the Gulf of Mexico. Takes about 20 minutes. During tourist season it gets a little longer at the end of the day but that's OK because the beach scenery makes up for it. ;)

The first 3 years we lived here I drove 85 miles one way to the other side of Houston. Left at 4:30 AM got home at 8:30 PM if it didn't rain. I don't mind telling ya, that sucked!

Re: Commute to work

I commute from Fredericksburg to Alexandria, VA - about 49 miles. If I drive it in the wee hours of the a.m. (leave at 5:00) it takes about 40 min. If I leave at normal times - anytime after 6:00 a.m. it takes about 2 - 2.5 hours. The drive home is never less than 2.5 hours.

So, for that reason, I commute by train, subway and shuttle bus. Normal times are about 1.75 hours.

When we move into our new place next April, I'll add 15 miles to the drive to the train station.

I can't wait to retire.

Re: Commute to work

The last 2 years before I retired I drove 60 miles, each way, twice a day. (I was in the classroom from 7 to 11 AM and 7 to 11 PM five days a week). Typical driving time was about 65 minutes each way because I commuted off rush hour. During rush hour it was more like 90 to 120 minutes each way.

Darn near killed me.

Re: Commute to work

Normally between an hour and an hour and a half each way. On Friday the police were chasing a guy who decided to go the wrong way up the motorway, killed a guy coming the other way and closed not just that part of road but the whole area. It took me SIX HOURS to get home. Not what you need on as Friday night - particularly when you're on a promise.
However its going I try to remember one thing - Its better to get there late than not at all.

Re: Commute to work

33 Miles to werk for me. I live in Lehigh Acres, and werk in Bonita Springs. In the past year, I put 20,000 miles on my truck. Mrs 12Footer also got a new truck two months ago, so I've been driving her 1993 Dodge DieNasty . It has 150K miles on it, so I figured out that it would pay us to keep it, drive it into oblivion, rather than run my truck out of warantee.
But i feel your pain. That 33Miles takes me 40-45 minutes in the Summer, but in the middle of snowbird season as we are now, it takes me 1.25 to 2hours, depending on traffic.

About 25 miles, takes me about 35 minutes. The drive itself dont bother me. What has me bummed is that amount of gas the 2500 ram eats up each week!

Re: Commute to work

26 miles each way. a good portion is through some scenic countryside. I enjoy the ride 'cause it allows time to reload (prep for work) or unwind (prep for home).

Used to commute only 12 minutes or so. Though fuel cost was moot, not enough time to transition from where I was to where I'm going.

BTW Mr. LF, sounds like a very cool ride along the gulf (envy..envy..)!!!!!

Re: Commute to work

I have nothing to complain about, my commute is a few miles, takes about 5-7 minutes. I used to have a long commute years ago, a nice 45 minute one. I don't miss that, I feel bad for those who have to endure it. Hope you have a nice stereo and plenty of cd's...

Re: Commute to work

I can WALK to my job in less than 15 minutes. Driving takes about 5-7 minutes depending on two traffic lights. Some people I work with have a
1 1/2 hour commute on a perfect day. Otherwise up to 3 hours to get home.

Re: Commute to work

46 miles and 55 minutes each way each weekday. Many saturdays as the workload demands. Traffic is never a problem. Road construction went smoothly with minimal interruptions, but 45mph sucked. It's done now and real nice. I pass the Horicon Marsh and end-up going over a rather scenic bridge where the marina is on the north side. 7 gallons of gas at roughly $2/gal means $14/day, $70/wk, $3640/yr. That's about 24,000 mi/yr which is once around the equator. Man, I need a raise! :(

Re: Commute to work

Ok, I feel a bit better now that most have a similar commute. I think my biggest problem with the commute is I am a very "busy" individual and not being able to do something productive while i sit in traffic drives me nuts. The back way carries me through some nice countryside and a nice older section of a nearby town (as well as by a local boat dealer). I've thought about trying some of the "learn to speak ***** language" type stuff. Yup JasonJ, have lots of CD's and a great stereo, but spend most of my time listening to talk radio. My old commute didn't bother me that bad and wasn't that much different, so not sure why this one frustrates me so, I guess just the extra traffic. I really like our new place though. Went from 3/4 acre/1200sqft to 1.5 acre/1900sqft less than 10 minutes from family. Maybe I'll feel better onece we get settled in, I get more used to the drive, and I get some of the big stuff around the house I need to get done.

Fortunately I have my little Ford Ranger I have relegated to a commuter vehicle that gets about 24mpg.

A whopping 3 miles one way!

Big Plus when you work 13-14 hour days as it is.

You get used to the F-15's taking off in full afterburner at all hours of the day, really you do!

AK Chappy

Re: Commute to work

Was a mobile mechanic for little more than a year, running my own truck.. Loved the job.. Aside from having another business to take care of, more than anything, the driving is what made me quit..

On a good day, one job at our "home" yard, the commute was about 12 miles which could take 30 minutes to an hour each way...

On a bad day the first job would be 25-30 miles north to swap out a bilge pump, and the last job of the day would be back 40 miles south to swap a starter... I-95 Traffic and construction.. Forgetaboutit...

Between getting to the jobs, then chasing parts, then back home, it was'nt unusual to log 100+ miles a day..

Now... My shop is little better than 2.5 miles, each way.. :D And even with running around here making the occasional delivery, I now get 25 gallons of gas every two weeks, instead of 25 gallons twice a week..

Re: Commute to work

6 miles, 1.5 hour walk or 9 minute drive.

Hey WillyB, do you work on the east side of 41, just across the Butte de Mortes (sp) bridge? I used to stop in at that old Speedway station everyday. It sure was convenient, but the restroom was the pits.

How come the new highways 110 - 45 - 441 - 10 aren't on the new WI state maps? The road has been open for quite a while, and it isn't even shown as a proposed hwy.
