Re: Commute to work

Roscoe, that's the place. The Speedway is owned by Arabs now. Most everything changed inside. Haven't checked out the johns, though.

Maps suck sometimes. I spent an hour looking for the Hwy 150 exit off 41. There is no Hwy 150 exit off 41. I had to pick-up a Bayliner with our work truck. No big deal except by the time I got there it was dark and snowing. The trailer lights blew the truck fuses and I was driving the truck pulling a boat with one headlight and a bad trailer bearing on the freeway during rush hour. When I got back I found 2' of water in the boat with an inch of ice on the top. I think the motor survived. One more night in the cold and it wouldn't have. Rich dude. Junky boat.

Re: Commute to work

Jason,

When I drove, talk radio kept me awake. Now I pass the time listening to books on CD that I check out from the library. It's been a great way to catch up on reading that otherwise I wouldn't get done.

Re: Commute to work

About 40 miles, takes 45 min, unless it is raining, or some bozo does something stupid.

I have a theory on rush hour traffic. It is all caused by one thing, tailgating. When the guy in front taps his brakes, the tenth guy in the line of tailgaters has to come to a dead stop. Tailgateing causes people to over-brake.

I try to "buffer the stops". In slow moving 20 mph traffic, I keep 10 car lenghts in front of me. Instead of going to 30, then zero, then 30 again, I can do 20 and never touch the brakes. Much less wear on the truck. When the traffic thins out, I am in the eaxct same position as if I had done the stop and go thing.

Its really funny that some people just cant stand it that I do this. But it is much less stressful, trust me.

Ken

1 minute -

From my bed to the great room, add 30 seconds more if I stop to hit the head on the way.

Now if the day is nice and I work outside, wireless internet dont ya know, then it may take 2 minutes, add another 30 seconds if I have to put the garage door up.

Now I do travel - here there and everywhere around the US and Europe so that sort of makes up for that 1 minute commute.

Tomatolord

Yeah, KIZ, but tell that to the Bozos who would keep pulling into that space you try to leave in front of you!

Honestly boom, people jumping in doesnt happen that often. Plus I leave plenty of room, so its no big deal.

I also belive tailgaiting is the number one reason for slowdowns when one lane merges into another. Leave enough room, and people can get over without stopping.

Ken

I also office out of the house. I can plan my trips around traffic.

I agree with the others about keeping a steady speed and space in front of you. It makes dealing with a jam allot less stressful. Now if we could keep the AAA+++ personalities from diving into that open space to gain 30 feet.

Re: Commute to work

I forgot to mention that with my job, my "commute" is just to get my paperwork. I then spend the day driving from 150 to 300 miles per day on average. There have been days where I worked 12-13 hours and only did maybe a couple hours of actual work, the rest was driving. There have been more than a few days where I could have driven to Seattle in the time it took to get to some of my jobs. Comes with the territory I guess.

Re: Commute to work

I currently live 18 miles from work. In the morning (around 4 am) it takes me about 14-15 minutes. At off time (2:30 pm) the boys in blue are out so it takes me about 25 minutes.

When I lived in Houston i could walk to my job in about 5 minutes. Sometimes driving it would take 1-2 minutes, others it would take 30. My school was 7 miles away and I had to be there at 7 am. If I left at 5:45 I would get there by 6. If I left at 6 I would be late, around 7:15. Its amazing the difference those 15 minutes would take.

Re: Commute to work

Hey Fixin, You Rock!

Part of my trip takes me past a 4-year road reconstruction that was recently completed. Except for the 2 years where we had to stop for dumptrucks crossing the highway, traffic moved extremely efficiently with very rare tie-ups. Now finished, the interchange is a work of art. Before I had to turn left off a 2-lane divided and cross over the oncoming lane. Okay with good visiblility, but the grim reaper was waiting on the corner on foggy days. Now I Bonzai the offramp at 70mph. Yeeeeeee Hawwww!

Re: Commute to work

Tomatolord, I hear ya. Next tuesday, the 14th, I will have my 28 hour commute to work. Man, I used to love to fly, now it is such a pain. Not that the airlines or security is making it such, it is just not fun any more.

Re: Commute to work

it takes me 35 min. in the morn and 40 in the p.m. If we get a little rain, snow, sleet, clouds, wind, sun it could take a lot longer.

Ken, I have a great memory about something like that!!! It was so hilarious, I will never forget it...it is forever stamped into my memory with indelible ink...I was coming back from a day trip in Seattle with a friend and his girlfriend and my wife...just before getting into Port Orchard is an area called Purdy...along there the traffic got a wee bit stuffy, and we were just minding our business, while evidently a guy had been trying for a while to get around us for a while and we didn't even know...seems that every time he would try to go past in the other lane, someone blocked him, and we were not in a hurry...finally just as he got to Burley-Ollalla road which crosses the Highway, and where this guy wanted to turn off (evidently he wanted to get home pretty quickly!!!) he was able to get beside us, and man he was showing his IQ and acting like a real idiot...he was so mad he had his ball cap off and slamming it on the seat beside him, hitting the window with it...we were all just laughing hilariously at his actions, knowing that it was making him even more mad...the whole thig that was so funny, was we were never aware of his car, and we never even tried to block the guy!!!
