Re: Commute to work

ehhenry, Can you give me info on Barnett? I don't live far off the TN end of the trace and it might make for a nice weekend trip some time.

Re: Commute to work

I see that my commute is a little different than everyone elses, as I use mass-transit, the Long Island RailRoad (LIRR) to be exact.

Fortunatly, I get to sleep the 90 minutes it takes me to travel from New York City, to my home on central Long Island.

Unfortunatly, the LIRR is not the most prudent railroad in the world, and is notoriious for being late, really late! Sometimes, up to 2 or 3 hours late!

I leave my house at 6:30 AM to catch the 7:02 train to Penn Station, which is scheduled to arrive at 8:23, but usually does not get there until 8:40. On the way home, I take the 5:10 PM "express" train to Speonk, which is scheduled to arrive at my station at 6:32 PM, but usually doesn't get there until 6:50.

The drive from the station to my home, is only 7/10th of a mile, so it only takes about 3 minutes from there.

Originally posted by Kenneth Brown:
My school was 7 miles away and I had to be there at 7 am. If I left at 5:45 I would get there by 6. If I left at 6 I would be late, around 7:15. Its amazing the difference those 15 minutes would take.
It is IMPOSSIBLE for me to show up at work at 8:00
It can not be done. I have to either be 20 minutes early or 20 min late, because to get there right at 8 means leaving with the 10,000000 other yahoo's that try to be there at 8 and all end up late.

quote:Originally posted by kenimpzoom:
About 40 miles, takes 45 min, unless it is raining, or some bozo does something stupid.

I have a theory on rush hour traffic. It is all caused by one thing, tailgating. When the guy in front taps his brakes, the tenth guy in the line of tailgaters has to come to a dead stop. Tailgateing causes people to over-brake.

I try to "buffer the stops". In slow moving 20 mph traffic, I keep 10 car lenghts in front of me. Instead of going to 30, then zero, then 30 again, I can do 20 and never touch the brakes. Much less wear on the truck. When the traffic thins out, I am in the eaxct same position as if I had done the stop and go thing.

Its really funny that some people just cant stand it that I do this. But it is much less stressful, trust me.
----------------------------------

I learned this when I drove a stick... pick a gear and stick with it.. and 5 miles later, your still within 100 yards of the vehicles that have been killing their cars.

Re: Commute to work

I always honk and wave as I pass those lane-changers, adn speeders, because keeping a constant rate most of the time brings me right up to them at some point...and they are stuck in the slow lane many times trying to get back over:) Oh yeah!!!!

Re: Commute to work

JasonB take a trip down the trace and you won't regret it. My wife and I took that trip the full length, and we finished up in natchez miss. I loved every mile of it.

BTW I drive two miles to work and ck the board for specials and then log anywhere from 2 to 3 hundred miles a day

Re: Commute to work

I commute 12 miles each way in a car during the week. It takes 35 minutes on average but Australia is the slowest driving nation with the most vigorous enforcement of anywhere I've driven (Most of Europe, Asia and US + Canada).
On the weekends my boys go sailing and although the club is 10 miles away by road and takes 25 minutes in the car, it's 6 miles by river and takes 15 minutes in the boat. So I guess you could say in our area boat commuting is the way to go. I must apply for a job at the club!

Re: Commute to work

Home office now. Always had more than a 20 mile one way commute before tho.. not to mention a few winters of driving north to job sites 6 days a week at an hour one way .. more if it was snow and ice .. longer yet if some idiot with a '2-door-spec' decided to cross the Wisconsin
River bridge at over 35mph .. saw the same guy in the same week wreck two cars (Firebird & Astro) right infront of me on the bridge.. passed me @ 50-55mph in snow and ice storms while I was driving 35-40mph in a 3/4ton crewcab 4x4 ..

just glad I don't need to put up with that anymore .. pros and cons to all of it, I guess.

Re: Commute to work

I'll add my daily commute; 45 miles one way, takes 45 to 50 minutes. One stop sign and about 1/4 mile to get on I-10 and 1 mile and no stop signs when I exit I-10. Going home I have three stop signs.
When I take the Diamondhead exit on the way home it's all worth it. We're located in an airpark with taxiway access and the hangar (& airplane)on the rear of the property. Marina is about two minutes from the house; 10 minutes from hooking up the trailer to boat in water, another 10 minutes of idle/nowake channel and we're in the bay.
Wife has a 4 minute commute.
Bill....

Re: Commute to work

ef, jason at kimandjason dot net. Thanks.

BubbaKat, I grew up around the trace, but have never driven over 20 miles of it at a time. Since I'ma nervous person with 2.5 tons in tow on the interstate, a leisurely drive down the trace at 55 might make for an enjoyable boating trip. Someday I've got to get up your way for some fishing. BTW: do you know of any boat bone yards in your neighborhood? I need a used lower for my '76 V4.

Re: Commute to work

I'm lucky about my drive to work. I start at 4pm and it is against rush hour. It takes me 30-45 minutes to drive to work. I usually stop at the ocean and look at the boats, then drive to work.
On the way home it is 11:30pm and there is no traffic. It takes me 30minutes exactly. I get home at 12 midnight. Time enough to make one drink and watch The Simpsons, then bedtime.
I think I am fortunate for my commute.
On the way to work, I see the traffic lined up sometimes for at least 10-15 miles long. I feel sorry for them cause I HATE traffic.

Re: Commute to work

25 miles at about 40 minutes average for me. My shifts are 0600-1400, 1400-2200, 2200-0600 so the traffic is never bad unless there's been an accident.

While I was going to school, I drove from home to work in Newtown (28 miles, 60-65 minutes), then from work to school at Drexel U (30 miles, 50-90 minutes), and finally, to home (38 miles, 50-60 minutes). 96 miles and about 3 hours average, 4 out of every five days. Yeccccccch! That left me about 4-5 hours per night to sleep. I was one cranky S.O.B.
