Checked out the ones in Walmart and at West Marine - hoping for something a little smaller (for ease of mounting).

Is there a more compact kit, preferably with a transparent water collector?

I'll be running a 30 HP Mariner.

If you are only running a 30hp then I would not bother unless you have a history of water in the fuel. Do you have a built in tank? If you are using a built in tank then sure if it makes you feel better put in the water filter ....... I would not.

The Walmart/Attwood unit isn't all that big, how small is your boat? Anyway, I'm a big fan and believer in the fuel/water separators, and would highly recommend one, even for a 30HP motor. These separators are just much better at filtering the fuel than the small under-cowl screen filters. Just my 2 cents worth, Good Luck!

Racor makes a small filter assembly for smaller HP motors. Google Racor 025RAC02

It only take one "history" of water to blow any HP stroke.

Re: Compact Water Separating Fuel Filter?

Appreciate the input. I'll use portable tanks and, thanks to recent experience with problems with ethanol (E10) in small engines, I'll be keeping the gas fresh. Nevertheless, I'll probably go with the filter, since it seems like relativey cheap insurance.

The boat is 15' 6" (Bayrunner), but with limited space in areas that would be suitable for mounting and accessable to get at the filter to replace elements. That's the attraction for a compact version. The Racor looks pretty good for my needs. I'll either go with that or, bite the bullet and squeeze in the Walmart.
