Have a friend who is repowering an older Skagit boat that has a 120 Merc in it and an old old drive. He found a great deal on a 2014 MPI 3.0L factory crate motor, a complete TKS bobtail unit. He is considering matching that up with a 1990 Alpha1 with 1.94 SEI outdrive. Alpha1 transom is 0C787939.

Looks like there are new part numbers for flywheel housing and couplers between '90 and '14, but I think those are identical in fit.

I would assume the electrical system will need a total redo with sensors.

Thanks for thoughts.

Rick,

Look at this Michigan motorz 3.0 base engine there are some details given about flywheel etc pre and post 1990. http://www.michiganmotorz.com/base-marine-engine-1967current-replacement-p-8871.html

The engine plug should match up, if not they offer 10 to 14 pin adapters should work either way. Given your experince did he consider upping to 4.3?

The plug adapters make sense.

The gentleman wanting to do this is pretty definite about wanting to go 3 liter. The old Skagit hull was designed for a max speed of about 25 - mph or knots I couldn't say. And he got an extraordinary deal on the 3.0L still in the crate. He wants my complete drive assembly from transom plate back to prop, I just wanted to be certain on answers to the questions on transom plate to flywheel housing, driveshaft to coupler, and the electrical systems - I am tossing in a complete wiring harness with gauges for a 1993 boat. I know this harness worked perfectly on a 1990 3.0L as well as the '93 4.3L but those didn't have any alarms or sensors to speak of. I had no clue on the 2014 harness requirements.

I appreciate the thoughts. Agree with you on the 4.3L. But I also agree with him that his deal on a 3.0L is pretty amazing and would drop in easy peasy.
