Compering 2 boats, different engines

I've been looking at 2 16' Lund Mr. Pike, one has an early 80s 35hp Johnson and the other has a mid 80s 40hp Johnson. The question is how much of a performance difference would there be between the 2 engines? Is the 35hp that much lighter in weight that there would be only a marginal difference? Fuel usage?

Both boats are the same. Rigged the same and the same weight other than the engines. The 40hp does have power tilt/trim.

Currantly running a 35hp Rude on my Lund S14 so I am very familiar with that engine family but know nothing of the 40hp., Any help

Re: Compering 2 boats, different engines

Both are good, but very different, designs. The 40 is a loop-charged big block 2-cylinder (approx. 44 cubic inches). The 35 is an older cross-flow design (31.8 cubic inches). The 40 will have better lugging capability due to extra cubes and the loop charge design should negate most, if not all, the possible additional fuel usage of the extra horsepower. Power trim is nice to have, too, and can also help increase fuel mileage when used properly. The 40 is also propshaft rated, while the 35 is powerhead rated, so when comparing apples to apples, the 35 is more like a 30 when rated at the propshaft (which is what the 35 morphed into when they started rating them that way in 1985).

So, side by side the 40 should perform noticably better on the same boat? Lund tells me the Pike goes about 500# dry. Almost twice the weight of the S14. The S14 does very well with the 35hp which is it's max.

Almost all of the waters I boat/fish are less than 1000 acres so top end speed isn't that important. Though at the same time don't want something that's going to struggle getting up to plane. Also most of these waters are or have some very shallow areas that I like to visit so draft depth is a consideration also. Which is why I haven't looked at the larger boats.

The trim/tilt is huge in my opinion. I think with the refinements of the 40 over the 35 on that particular boat you would notice a difference in performance. Personally, I would be willing to pay more for the 40 w/trim & tilt. But how much more? Considering both boats of equal shape and maintenance, and both motors being equal in that regard as well, I would probably be willing to pay an extra $500 - $700 for the trim and tilt and "newer designed, higher HP" motor.

Re: Compering 2 boats, different engines

Thanks,

Not decided yet on which way to go. Looking at 4 total at the moment. The 2 I've asked about are Pike 16D models and 2 others are Mr Pike models that each have 50hp outboards and a bit more money.

The one with the 40hp is less money than all of them but is also more of a project boat. Needs to be gutted completely which when finished would be more $$ than the other one with the 35hp on it. Though I am leaning towards the one with the 40hp.
