compression in a 1986 115 Suzuki?

I just aquired a 1986 115 Suzuki. We checked the compression in all the cylinders, and they all read 122. My question is: does anyone know what the compression should be in this engine? Would a leak down test be more accurate? I'm new at this.
Thanks

Howdy, clamdigger.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Your compression is fine. With electric start engines anything over 100psi is usually considered good.

Because guages and techniques differ so much makers don't publish compression specs. What is important is the spread of the cylinders. Within 10% is considered good, over 15% not good.

Milestone: I got to answer your first post with my 30,000th post. :) Not bad for only seven years, huh?

well now, the way I see it, there are two reasons to celebrate! My compression is good, and you've done 30,000 posts! I feel honored to be part of that milestone with my first post. Thanks so much for all of your advice; there may be hope for this engine yet, and with your continued help I'll be crusing in no time.
Thanks again.
