One more point. With some two strokes, the piston comes very close to the spark plug. This may be especially true for motors that use the flat end spark plugs (surface fire plugs).
If the compression tester will penetrate the compression space further than the spark plug that you remove, check for clearances before installing the gauge. If you don't have clearance for the compression tester, use a shorter adapter or take other precautions to make sure that you don't knock a hole in the piston.
