Hey Guys , Looking at 2001 johnson 175 hp , Owner says that comp; 100- 103 lbs That seems to be a little low ? , He claims that he has certified mechanics working for him , what do you think He also say that is normal . he wants $ 3900. The motor is not on a boat and is 300 miles from me . Any ideas .

Re: compression test

Well first and foremost, run the compression test while you are there so you can see the numbers, at the very least. It does sound low, so maybe someone on here can chime in with the correct specs. The numbers are lower than my 80s 120 looper, so I can't imagine that is a good thing.

Re: compression test

Do you know how the compression test was done? Was the engine warm or cold (should be warm). Cold and warm will be different.

Re: compression test

The compression sounds normal for that mtr but you have to remember compression gauges very in readings.

Re: compression test

What boobie said. Those V6s were low compression engines. I would not be alarmed by any reading over 80psi.

Good point. It's more about the variation between cylinders, no?
