compression tests

It is frequently suggested that a compression test is performed as a basic diagnostic tool.

Usually questions here are about 2 strokes .Is the compression test equally valid as a basic diagnostic test for 4 strokes? My first thoughts are that probably even more so given the possibility of defects with the valves etc

A compression test is exactly what it says: a test to see if a cylinder can support combustion that all, it does not always show if a cylinder has damaged as aengine can have scuffed cylinders and still have good compression. It is better to do a leak down test especially on a 4 stroke
