All operating systems have holes that can be exploited.<br /><br />It's the popularity of Microsoft products, it's endless features and the availability of developer's tools, that hacker choose to exploit it most often. At least they put out a quick fix.<br /><br /> ALSO, JUST CURIOUS <br /><br />Of those who caught this bug, were you using a hardware router, or at least running a "personal firewall", like Black Ice or ZoneAlarm, on your PC?<br /><br />I belive this bug was looking for TCP port 135.<br /><br />Marty

Caught more likely by Norton Anti-virus (NAV) on the way in to me. I catch about 12 attempts per day on average.<br /><br />I let NAV scan all inbound and outbound email and have auto definition update so as soon as new defs come out I download them.<br /><br />I also check windowsupdate at least twoce a month for critical (security) updates

Hey Ralph.<br /><br />Running a good virus protection program only, may give you a false sense of security in this case.<br /><br />Since this threat is a worm not a virus, it attacks network ports directly on a PC and not from an infected file.<br /><br />NAV will now detect this worm, but there are thousand of vulnerabilities out there if your network ports are not protected.<br /><br />Everyone should be using either a hardware firewall(router), or at least using a software firewall, like Zonealarm or Black Ice. XP has one built in, although I have not used it.<br /><br />Marty

Just chiming in to agree. Keep an updated virus software. If you have a DSL, cable or any other always on connection, get a firewall. Software works well, hardware works better, combo works best. Make sure your virus software is set to scan your email.<br /><br />Even with this in place, you still can bge vulnerable, but just barely.<br /><br />At work I was behind a PIX, had McAfee running and updated, I had IE security set at meduim. I mistyped my favorite search site Dogpile and the new site somehow downloaded something onto my computer. McAfee caught it right away, but it was already on my computer. It took a special download and manual file deletion to get rid of it. Even I cannot understand how it got around the security other than I was a couple revs behind on patches.

I also run a SW based firewall as I recommend eveyone do in my post earlier. I have tried and installed all the ones you have mentioned at one time or another on one machine or another, including XPs built in firewall.<br /><br />By the way, if anybody out there wants to test their fireall check out:<br /><br /> http://www.dslreports.com/secureme <br /><br />This virus was not caught by my firewall. If there was an attempt to infect me, it was most likely caught by NAV as I said, I stop about a dozen infected files per day from reaching me.

Hey Scoop,<br /><br />Good stuff, but I would recommend a firewall even for dial-up users. If you are connected, you have an IP address and will be vulnerable while connected.<br /><br />The other problem you had experienced sounds like malicious Java code or script. I don't know how anybody could keep up with all of the possibilities for that.<br /><br />Marty

How or why are you guys getting so many virus attempts a day?<br />I don't run any virus protection and I haven't had a virus in atleast a year.<br />I was told that just about the only way you can get a virus is by downloading files from the internet or from e-mail. Is this true? I rarely download anything.<br />Am I just lucky?
