I can usually figure out my computer problems but I have one that's stumping me right now. For some reason my computer stopped accessing some web sites. I mean, it won't let me go to google.com and some others that I have used in the past. I have reset the security settings to medium in IE. I even tried to use Firefox thinking that it might be an IE problem but that doesn't work either. I'm thinking that it must be some Windows setting that got flubbed up...in SP2 or something. Does anyone have any ideas....thanks in advance.

Do you have zone alarm or similar software, it could be blocking it.

I disabled my virus program and tried. My only firewall is in SP2... I shut that down and tried it... no joy.

Paul... I'm on cable.. Roadrunner<br /><br />BoatBouy... that doesn't work either.<br /><br />The thing is.. I can get a lot of sites and can't get a lot. This thing just happened in the past couple of days.

Open a command prompt and see if you can ping www.google.com

That would make it a network problem, not an IE security problem. Best be talking to your cable provider. If you want to further refine, from a command prompt, do a tracert to www.google.com. That might tell you/cable provider where the communication is being lost.

can't paste it here for some reason. But all it says is "timed out" 4 times and something about 100%loss.<br />Same thing with iboats.com even though I can get on iboats..obviously.<br />However I did get a good ping for download.com......strange happenings.

I guess it must be an IP or network problem cuz I can't get on google with my laptop either. It is networked through a router to my cable modem.

There is a linksys problem that can do that. Make sure you've got your router updated with the latest drivers.

WEll..so much for that. I went to the Linksys site, found no drivers but did find firmware. I downloaded the firmware .bin file, followed the directions and it wouldn't load the new file... told me that the password was wrong. I used the default password just as the instructions said. Man, this is a pain. Looks like I'll probably end up having to re-format.... again.

It could be a DNS problem. DNS is what converts a domain like www.yahoo.com into a into an IP address. Make sure the DNS addresses are the same in your Linksys as in your computer. Check with your internet provider to make sure there are no problems. Reboot your cable modem, Linksys, and PC in that order. If none of that works, connect your PC directly to your cable modem and see if you are still having problems. If the problems go away, the problem is in your router. If not, the problem is in the network or a setting in your PC

Ok.. I unplugged everything.... cable modem, linksys router, and vonage modem. Let everything sit for a couple of minutes. Plugged it all back in and it's working again. Computers... gotta love 'em. Thanks to all who responded to my plea... glad to be aboard with you all.
