Computer stuff..........

I run MS Outlook on my desk top(considered "home" computer?) and the new LT. I have it set up to leave the e-mail on the server so I can access it on the LT. Works great. But, I have to physically delete e-mail from both computers inbox which is irritating. Can I set up my desk top to not receive mail and just receive on the LT?

When I click on the send/receive tab, there is a "work offline" option that wont allow new mail. The problem is, it has a red x on that option so I can't activate it....... What to do????????

Thanks...........

The easiest way is to just remove the account from Outlook.

Does your ISP have a Webmail feature? The problem is non-Webmail (like Outlook) downloads mail to your desktop and the LT. Since you set up your mail service to leave mail on the server after downloading, only deleting from both the desktop and LT will get rid of it.

If you have Webmail, you pick one or the other to use Webmail only and turn off the regular email. With Webmail you can read mail, but it isn't downloaded - It stays on the mail server. The other non-Webmail machine will get all your emails downloaded. You can read, reply, delete from either Webmail or Outlook, and the Webmail should mirror whats on the mail server.

Sound confusing, how about this. Most ISP's allow multiple email addys. So set up two accounts, your original and a second addy. Something like WIMUSKY@yourISP.net (current addy) and a new one like WIMUSKYLT@yourISP.net. Pick which one you want for the desktop and which for the LT and set up whatever you use on the LT to grab the WIMUSKYLT mail. Then you can forward mail between the two addys if you want to see the mail on both computers. I seem to remember that the desktop is now your business machine, so keep your original address in Outlook and set up the LT with the new address. It will take a while to get non-business contacts re-directed to the new address.

Got questions - Call Bill Gates! :joyous:

Looks like we have webmail. We used to go to the local library and check our e-mail while vacationing on the Gulf..

How do I turn off mail on DT? Never had to do it before.....

We currently have 2 addys. One business and one personal on both @ISP.net The game plan is to turn off regular mail on the DT and hopefully have the mail show up on the LT and if we need to view/send mail on the DT, then we would login to webmail... Should work?

I thought you were his long lost cousin??????????

This is why I went with my email in the cloud using MS 365. My email is available on all my devices and if I delete it in one place, it gets deleted for all devices. It's not free but worth the $4/month.

It should work. On the DT, disable OE from starting on-up if it's set like that and don't click on it out of habit when you go to check mail. Use the Webmail.

If that doesn't work, try Seafoam. It fixes all engine problems.

How long do they retain files before deleting?

I will ask. You get 25GB of mail storage so I don't think they ever get deleted.

I love the service so far and the set up was all done free by a contractor that MS assigns to you.

The company I work for also uses MS 365 but obviously a different plan.

One thing I always did do was a backup of the outlook pst file. Of course the problem with doing that is that you really need to have the backup somewhere besides at home in case the house burns down.

Edit: I mailed them about retention of emails and got a reply back:

Hello Bruce,

I am happy to hear that you love the service.

Emails are generally kept within your Office 365 tenant indefinitely. (As long as emails are within your Inbox or sub folders)
If you have archiving enabled, your Office 365 Tenant will automatically move your Emails to the Archive folder after 6 months of the email arriving to your inbox.

Your Deleted Items folder only has a retention policy for 30 days. It is then moved over to your Recovered Deleted items folder where it will sit for 14 days. After 14 days it is moved to the Purges folder, emails will sit here for 14 days and then be permanently deleted.

If you have been upgraded to Office 365 Wave 15 (New interface) and have enabled In-Place hold emails will generally follow the same steps as listed above, but once they reach your Purges folder, they will not be deleted. They will remain on the server the specific amount of time that you set.

Another nice thing is calenders. You can use any device to set up appointments and all devices will have the same info and give you reminders.

We got a quick dumping of snow this pm, so I've been plowing. More tomorrow and probably Wed. Daughter had a Christmas program at school tonite. Band/Choir. She also was acknowledged for being 1 of 4 to make honors choir. That was cool.... So I've been away....

For now I removed Outlook on the desktop on the DT computer. Less chance of starting it up. We'll see if I now get e-mails on just the LT.

ANNNND, Seafoam does fix everything!:D

Thanks....working on the commercial side of the business I'm required by company policy to keep e-mails for 5-7 years. I do 3 to 3.5 GB a year in emails so storage and backup capability is a concern.

That isn't a problem. I have the bare minimum. You can get as much as you want.

I can message you contact info the the contractor I worked with or you can go to MS directly. When I emailed them yesterday, they got back with me in less than a minute.
