There are sales all over the Web , there are bunches of routers in the 19.00 to 39.00 range...rebates if course, but still, they are cheap insurance.

Would putting in a firewall be the same thing or is that something different?

A router IS a firewall by design. It's called a hard (hardware) firewall. There are 'soft' (software)firewalls too. Popular soft firwall programs are ZoneAlarm,BlackIce, etc. Hard router/firewalls like the Linksys BEFSR41 are very popular and don't cost a fortune. They protect your computer by blocking access TO your computer from the outside (the Web). Soft firewalls do basically the same thing but can block bad stuff from LEAVING your computer as well. You might ask, 'What would I want to block from leaving my computer??" Well , if you have spyware on your computer, it can stop access to the Web BY that program. I find it best to use both, a router AND a soft firewall program. Most hardware router/firewalls don't check to see what's leaving your computer, just what's trying to come in.

Just for grins go here:
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
This site was created to show you how you may be vulernable to outside attack from hackers etc. At Shields Up, you can let them scan your commputer connection to the Web and look for problems and offers fixes. Steve Gibson (Shields Up site admin) explains the issues about web security. Best of all, this info is free.

I bought a D-Link router that has a built in print server so your whole network can use a printer without the need for a dedicated PC to be on all the time.

The model # is: DI-707P
7-port hub with a print server.

I got it from Amazon.com. It was around $50 after rebates if memory serves.
I run my wireless internet through it. It's sweet. Very easy to set up and manage.

It has a firewall as well, but I also run Zone Alarm Pro on all my PC's. Zone Alarm is not only good for keeping your network hidden, it stops 99.99% of the pop-ups and garbage.

H.

SBN, did your cable company give you a firewall with your service? Most are today becuase it is in their own best interest not to have all their customers launching DoS (Denail of Service) attacks, etc when they become zombies.

If not, download and install the highly rated Zone Alarm. It is a free software based firewall and is fine for what you need (and did I mention it's free?)

Here is a link with a review and link to download:
http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10217783.html?tag=lst-0-1
